To resurrect an old topic: I was wondering if anyone has access to Highland (hair-on) cowhide or knows where one could find a sporran made from the same? Aaron Shaw (Wicked Tinkers piper) has one, but the gent that made it for him is long-since retired. I did a search here on the site and while there has been some discussion on the topic, there's not a lot of useable information. Since it has been quite some time since anyone broached the subject, I thought I'd revisit it in hopes of someone having some new information.

I recently posted on the History section that the Carmichael Collection was shortly to go online. Well the tartan stuff is now up and includes and interesting jacket claimed to be c1745 that I'd seen through the glass but these pictures are superb and a great aid to study.

I'm not a costume expert but there's something about the cut that makes the date seem wrong. Revers collars are c1760-90 but the arms look more of a Regency cut. A nice jacket and the cloth is certainly C18th so perhaps it was reused later or the jacket restyled? The internal patch is Wilsons' cloth, their No158 whereas the black lining with the red stripes (checks) looks older.

Thoughts?

I'm wondering what everyone wears for shoes and hose, if any hose at all. I'm trying to figure out what kind of shoes look good with hose for a casual setting; Hiking boots, runners, converse, Docs or anything else along those lines. Do you skip out on the hose when not wearing dress shoes or brogues? Right now I dont have any hose and I'm not sure if I like them but many here have said, along with my wife, that I should try them out. Any suggestions or ideas are welcome. If you are willing to share pictures as examples, even better.
Thanks,

Well, we're finally doing it: going to Ireland and Scotland; leaving Pittsburgh on July 6th; land in Dublin and spend two days there before flying to Edinburgh to meet up with my son, who is coming from California. My dilemma is, we only have four days there before returning to Ireland. Any suggestions for visits in both areas would be greatly appreciated.

Our itinerary for Ireland is somewhat set, but not carved in stone. Scotland, well, we have some ideas but would be willing to listen to helpful hints.

The plan is to see Edinburgh some, and have a car to travel to Loch Ness, over to Argyll and the Isle of Skye. Does that sound feasible in four days? Any other options?? I'm all ears.

Thanks!

Natalie MacMaster is the niece of one of Cape Breton's most celebrated veteran violin players, Buddy MacMaster. While Buddy performs the music absolutely traditionally with the deft hand of a virtuoso, Natalie is no less a master of the idiom in her own right. Natalie is an internationally acclaimed fiddler who has brought the music of her home on the small North Atlantic Island of Cape Breton to audiences around the world for many years.

This music was not invented on Cape Breton but rather, it was carefully tranplanted from the Scottish West Highlands and Islands by her forebearers and faithfully nurtured, protected and cherished down the generations.

While Natalie has one foot firmly planted in the soil of Cape Breton, she is a traveller of the world. As such, she has been willing to perform her own Cape Breton twist on other styles of fiddle music showing her absolute mastery not only the local traditional style but also over the violin generally. She's also a hell of a stepdancer and beautiful person both inside and out.

Afternoon all.

I'm a Scoutmaster from Kansas who will be getting his Wood Badge beads in the middle of June. I had a list of things I was going to "reward" myself with when I completed my tickets and getting a kilt was one of them. So today I ordered a MacLaren from SWK that I look forward to wearing at my beading ceremony. I also got another leader who also completed his tickets to get a kilt too, and he is getting beaded the same night.

Don't have my first kilt in hand yet and I am already looking for a green utility style one that will go good with my Scout uniform for daily wear. I'm being told by the wife that I cost too much.

Looking forward to being a part of this community, and I guess the "required" model shot will come next month.

I'm English with a French surname (presumably Hugenot, but not confirmed). I have a Black Watch kilt, which I love, and a Cornish Hunting kilt on order (both my grandmothers had Cornish connections).

I don't want to claim Scottish or clan connections when they don't exist.

But I'm sure I will want a third kilt in due course. I've got a Lovat Blue jacket on order and I'm wondering that I'd like a predominantly blue kilt. I'm quite happy to get a clan tartan if it looks nice and won't lead to me being mugged in the streets of Inverness. I've looked through Marton Mills website and there's not anything obvious.

Any recommendations?

Hi All,

here's a question I couldn't find an answer yet.

Usually the name Smith is associated with the Macphersons and Clan Chattan.
Also a connection with the Macdonalds is often mentioned.
But sometimes I also read about a connetion to the MacGregors and MacFarlanes but only about the fact without any explaination or historical facts.
Does anyone know more about it?

Please let me know :)
After much effort on my part and much destruction of various items in my room while trying to swat it, it managed to get away. Cedar is already in place within my closest and around / in my garment bags, but I did notice that the smell has become fainter.

My Brother in Law told me he was prepared to "raze" me about wearing a "skirt", but that after he saw me, was impressed with how good it actually looked, and that he was a little envious.. The few of us who were kilted, received many compliments from guests.

Here's a photo of me giving the Father of the Bride speech. I was a bit "lubricated" on some good Scotch and Champagne, but my Daughter said that afterward there wasn't a dry eye in the house, including Ol' Dad's...

Thank you all for helping make this a very memorable day for our Daughter, her new Husband our families and friends.

One of the questions that I've had in getting started wearing kilts is which tartans should someone wear.

In the research I've done, I haven't come up with a definitive answer so I wanted to post it here and see if I can at least come to some conclusion by popular vote if nothing else.

The answers I have found to this question so far are these:

If you don't have a legitimate claim to it, don't wear it.

If you can buy it, you can wear it.

For casual events or everyday, wear whatever you want. For formal events, wear what you represent.

So, I now present this question to you, XMTS community: Which tartan(s) should a person wear (and when).

Here's how my DIY tweed sporran turned out. I was going to use two buttons and a cord for a closure but instead went with a suggestion from MNlad to use grommets.

Planning to replace the cheap sporran strap with a solid leather one as soon as I can. I had to replace the chain. It kept breaking. Next up is the spring clasps, they tend to get hung up on the tweed and/or my kilt! Eventually it's going to end up like the family hatchet - the head's been replaced twice, and the handle three or four times, but it's still the same family hatchet handed down for generations.

Sporran #3 will be tweed and leather. The duck canvas is okay, but I think a leather gusset would look better.
