Acceptable Plaids
Hi folks, thanks for having me. I’m new to kilts and have a few questions with the first one being, what plaid is acceptable for a great kilt? The local fabric stores have a few plaids and to get things started I bought the cheapest just to practice putting it on. In the store the stuff I bought didn't look all that bad but when I got it home it started looking like a table cloth...thoughts? Any tips on picking out non-tartan plaids for the great kilt?

Thank you.

Lets see if this works

I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Welcome to xmarks!
Remember that tartans were not named or standardized during the hay-day of the belted plaid. That being the case, anything of a tartan-like pattern would be historically correct (though I must say that, in period, tartans containing a lot of white were most often worn by women...yours still looks fine for a man to wear though, I think). Even so, what you have there looks pretty good and will certainly get you by and get you used to wearing the plaid. Good luck in all your kilted endeavors!

That being said, someone will no doubt ask you what tartan it is anyway. So, either find a name for it, or attempt to educate those who ask.
Or, depending on where you're wearing the great kilt, you could always come up with a story about how it's the favorite pattern of a small weaver who lives on the outskirts of a remote Scottish village. Invent a whole back story.

from both southern US coasts!
Not that I know much about these things, either, but I don't see why you can't make that one work.

I found some clearance priced plaid at a local store, and grabbed 4 yards for a "practice" kilt. Weeks later, thinking about pleating, I noticed that it was not even a tartan---it's not symmetric in x and y (or warp and weft to the fabric people).
Now I'm working on my story that it's the Welsh branch of Clan MacFabricstore.
