    Alt Colors for PC jackets

    Folks,

I have zero exp in modern Scottish fashion, everything including my time in Panama with the St Andrews Society there has been based in Historic Scottish Dress. With that said, is any color other than black acceptable for Formal wear? Not wanting a Pink PC Coatee, but a nice rifle green or English Royal Blue. Am I totally out there flapping?

I have seen many sites with other colors available. The standard though is black, just as with tuxedos. Another good thing about black is it will coordinate with any color.

Any formal event I have seen, it's always black jackets that are worn.

I've seen a white PC, but I couldn't tell you where.

I have always looked at the PC as a black only garment for black tie events.. I would see maybe an Argyle in different colors..

The colors you mentioned do sound nice!

I saw a PC in rifle green at the local shop a week ago. It looked pretty good. I've also seen one in sky blue on a fellow at a SFO performance in town. That didn't appeal to me much. I still prefer basic black on myself.

Yes, other colours, such as those you mention, are available from many of the Highland outfitters in Scotland - even our own sponsor, KiltStore, lists them. They can look good and they can look terrible!

As everyone else has stated, black is the most acceptable. Coloured Prince Charlies should only be worn - no, CAN only be worn - with a tartan containing a complimentary colour. For example, a dark green PC would look ghastly with a Royal Stewart kilt, but would work well with a Modern Gunn or even Black Watch kilt. Unless you wear just one tartan, you are going to be very limited with a coloured PC. Black can be worn with anything.

As for cream or white PCs: someone (in the USA) once said that white Tuxes are for waiters. I agree and believe the same applies to PCs!!
