Anyone know how to make their own hose garters and flashes?

I was just wondering if anyone out there has made their own garters and flashes? I don't currently own any, and before I plunk down my hard-earned $$ and purchase any, I would like to know if anyone has made their own for less?

they are quite easy actually. I have made a few sets for some friends. I just used a nice black material, and sewed it over top of elastic. For the closure I used a "bathing suit" or a "bra" hook. They seem to work good, and they were alot cheaper then the $25 I spent on my pair at a Scottish store. I think I made three sets for $15.

A pattern set from www.folkwear.com has the instructions for knitting Argyl hose, but it would be easy to make them one solid color. As for the flashes, the fabric or ribbon and elastic is cheap enough and you could even use velcro to close the garter band.

Also look for the classic "So your Going to Wear the Kilt". There is section on making flashes.

go to a store that sells flashes (or better yet borrow some from someone that bought them), have a good look at them, and see ho weasy they are to make. You will gt the general idea in seconds.

The cheapest way I know of is to go to the Walmart fabric section and purchasesome 3/4" wide underwear elastic, some velcro, and a few strips of the colored satin ribbon (not the stuff for giftwrapping). A needle and thread and an hours work in front of the TV should land you with a couple of pair all for under $10.00. I let the ribbon hang down with 2" to 3" of exposure.

Grosgrain (pronounced grow-grain) ribbon is what you're thinking of Blu. Bout an inch and 1/4 wide.

Thanks for all the tips! By the way, I received an email from StillwaterKilts the other day. Jeremy is selling flashes (red, black or green) 3 for $25. Not bad!
