    Argyll Vests

I need to get an Argyll vest for an upcoming ballet. I have a jacket now (made in the UK) and it's a 44 long. When I purchase the vest, does the size match the jacket?

Yes, but be careful -- it might not match the jacket.

Actually my jacket and vest size ended up being quite different. My jacket is a 44R off the rack (to accommodate my shoulder width - it's a bit big on the waist) and as I'm rather narrow in the waist my vest is a 40R. Such is the dilemma when trying to dress a body that has spent far too many years rockclimbing (wide shoulders and narrow waist) in clothes that are more commonly tailored to fit men wider in the waist!

I would probably be better off with a 42R jacket... but when I bought it I was unable to try on a 42R to compare and that is why I bought the 44R. Maybe one day I will be able to afford a tailor made jacket and vest combo!

See if your vendor would be happy to send you a couple of different sizes to try. I was lucky to have a very obliging vendor here in Oz who sent me three different sizes to ensure I got one that was the right fit. Very trusting!

Both my jacket and vest are from the same manufacturer (St Kilda) and so the material matches really well.

    Best of luck!

Before you judge someone be sure to walk a mile in their kilt.
That way you are at least a mile away and you have their kilt...

Can you use the same supplier who sold you the jacket? That would improve your odds of having the same vendor for the waistcoat.

At a guess. A waistcoat that goes(matches) with an Argyll jacket? I confess that I have not heard them described as such before.

That's what it is. A 5-button waistcoat that goes with an Argyll jacket. PC vests have 3-buttons I believe.

    Thanks for all the advice.

Might it not be more accurate to speak of an "evening waistcoat/vest" which usually is cut lower and has three or four buttons, when one speaks of a "PC Vest"? The higher cut waistcoats/vests usually have five or six buttons and are worn with a four-in-hand neck tie. Sometimes these are worn in the evening.

Might I suggest having an evening waistcoat made of tartan, cut on the bias? Very sharp looking and always correct!

I can see this looking good with an Argyle Jacket for day wear, but would it be correct for formal occasions? What about with a PC jacket?

A tartan waistcoat, cut on the bias, is very traditional and completely correct for formal evening wear, I cannot recall, however, seeing one worn with day wear.
