I always wear it without a waistcoat but only because I don't have one to match the jacket. I prefer the look without one anyway for daytime wear.

It depends on how cold it is, which coat I am wearing, or wear I am wearing it. I like the flexibility.

For our RSCDS Ball earlier this year known as the Tartan Ball held at the Royal York I and most other attendants wore the Prince Charlie outfit here is a picture of me from that night.
Of course there was one gent in a Montrose Doublet and next year I will wear mine.

Oh, OK, so a vest makes it more formal. Then I'll get the vest and it can be used or not used as necessary. BTW, nice Montrose! I love those. You don't see them as much.

Thank you I was lucky enough to find it at a wonderful price on ebay, however I had been looking for one for a year before finding my size.

And thanks to all the folks who posted photos, I also found an answer to my question.
I have an Argyl but no waistcoat, and I wasn't sure what tie to wear with it. While it appears from the photos that just about any well-coordinated tie will be dapper, to me, the solid-colored ones look nicest.

Finding solid color non-shiny-finish ties is in itself a bit of a challenge!

You ain't kidding!! I have to go to the second hand and Good Will stores just to find ties!
Guess I don't mind wearing ties with subtle blended colors, though... Anything too bright stands out on me something aughful. I need pastels and blandness around me...

I've not had a problem finding solid colour wool ties up here, then again there are a few tartan shops in the area.
