Buy fabric now, have kilt made later?

I'm on my Great Diet (two weeks so far), and am looking at the way prices for everything seem to be going up.

And wondering if I might be smart to buy tartan fabric now, and have a kilt made up in about a year. Opinions?

You could do that.

Or you could go ahead and have the kilt made in your goal size, and when you see it hanging in the closet it will be a strong motivator to stick with the weight loss plan.

Buy the fabric now, and when you actually do get down to your desired size/weight have the kilt made. It is virtually impossible to tell what your waist and hip measurements will be once you've dropped weight, and any attempt at making a kilt that will fit "sometime in the future" will only result in a kilt that won't fit, ever.

Buy the tartan now, especially if you find a good deal. I bought my tartan for a Weathered Ulster kilt a good year-and-a-half before I shipped it to Barbara Tewksbury for the sewing. I did it because I had a Dollar Savings Plan to pay for the kilt--I don't spend ones; I save them--and it took a while to pay for the kilt.

Start watching for remnants and end-of-bolt sales; you might find a real bargain.

Heritage of Scotland is having a 10% off sale on tartan right now. For example, 16oz Lochcarron fabric in my clan tartan is $54 per yard double width. There are a number of quality kilt makers here in the states who will be happy to make you a beautiful kilt using your supplied tartan. Kathy Lare and Bonnie Heather Green are two who I can unconditionally endorse.

I think it's a fantastic idea. Just keep it in a super dark place out of the sun. It would suck to pull that tartan out in a year to find a big bleached out spot.

Have to agree with the others...buy the tartan now. Later, after you reach your goal size, either have the kilt made, or make it yourself. you won't be dissapointed

More agreement here. If you find a deal on tartan, TAKE IT! If nothing else, you don't run the risk of it being potentially out of stock when you're ready to order you kilt. (Of course, this is really not likely unless you are looking at a rare or difficult tartan to acquire).
