    Buying first kilt

I'm planning on buying my first kilt this coming week. Come January 2008, I will be on much firmer financial ground, and will have some money to invest in a more expensive kilt. However, I need a kilt fairly quickly, and due to money concerns, I am currently considering buying a Stillwater Economy kilt, and if it works out for me, buying a Stillwater kilt for my girlfriend's 14 year-old son (his idea).

Does anyone have any experience with the economy kilt? Is it worth spending the money on?

It's great value for money! It can be dressed up nicely.

My current avatar shows a SWK economy. In size 34, it's about 4.5 yards of material, has belt/sporran loops and straps, but the fell is not stitched down ( that is, the top of the pleats which would normally be tapered from the waistband to the hips). It's very nicely pleated to the stripe.

I have hand stitched this one to give it a little taper and less "flare" at the top. I'll post a pic soon... I consider it a fairly successful modification.

The Economy models are OK, but having one of each, I'd suggest you'd probably be happier with the Standard model.

Fluter, I would really like some wordage on that process. I attempted to stitch down an economy and a thrifty, and did not do so well.......... ended up making them too tight in the seat.

On the economy - YES!! I have two, am wearing my Irish National to work right now. I like the standard a little better, but for the money the economy is outstanding. If you spring for the standard, you get stitched dowm pleats.

Also have a box pleater "heavyweight", it is a very light wool, excellent for hot humid western shore Maryland and Delaware Beaches. I don't think I could buy that much 11 oz tartan for the price.

Also Jerry is very fast to ship, and to answer any questions you may have. I just noticed your location, FWIW - I find the economy better in heat than the standard. much cooler.

P.S. Just got a shipping comfirmation from Jerry 13 minutes ago. That is before 0630 his time I think. Damn early in the morning in any case. He really does work hard and responds to his customers quickly.

I own one in Black Watch, My wife got it for me for Christmas last year and I am planning on getting a few more. I wore mine to a party last Feb and the temp was in the low 20's and I was quite comfy in it. So go for it and enjoy..

Plans change, as usual. It looks like I'm ordering a standard in Nightstalker tartan. I'll post pictures when I get them.
