So I recently had Testicular Cancer. I am now cancer free and am in the process of having a wish granted from Make-A-Wish. They are working on Finallizing a family trip to Scotland over spring break. I have Narrowed it down, out of the many things to do, to being in Edinburgh and Inverness. Can you guys recomend Kilt Shops in these areas? Also, what would I be looking at for prices. I would want to get more formal atire, like a Prince Charles jacket, possibly a fly plaid, etc. I would wear it to my cousin's wedding a few months later.

My family Name/Clan is Walker. I also have Macdougall in my family and I know historically, the Walker Family is asociated with the Macmillans.

You may want to Google up "Strathmore Woolens". A 16 oz worsted wool, handmade kilt will run about 500.00 USD. You can get a matching fly plaid for about 75.00 USD from Strathmore.

There are many good and highly regarded kiltmakers in Scotland (and sadly some not so good too, so do some homework before you visit). My personal favourite in Edinburgh is Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd at 57/59 High Street, The Royal Mile, Edinburgh, EH1 1SR (Freephone from the USA: 1 800 566 1467) www.geoffreykilts.co.uk They are still very much a family-run business and I have had nothing but First Class dealings with them over the past twelve years, at least. Ask for a copy of their comprehensive catalogue to be sent to you - which will explain everything.

I have not been to Inverness for many years but Hector Russell Ltd were the people to consult there. They are still there, I believe, but were taken over a few years ago and, regrettably, I know nothing of their present standing.

That is now the Highland House of Fraser, have been in there but didn't buy anything, but it looks like a good class of merchandise. There is another kilt shop near the Steeple too but I can't remember the name.

There are still Hector Russell shops in Edinburgh - one on Princes St and one on the High St, just around the corner from Bank St. Also further down the Royal Mile St Kilda (Nicholson Kilts) in the Canongate is well worth a look.

First off, let me also offer my congratulations on your recovery.

I will second Hamish's recommendation of Geoffrey (Tailor) Ltd. I have two kilts from them, one that I purchased about 27 years ago, and one that I bought about 3 years ago. They have two shops in Edinburgh, one at the top of the Royal Mile just before you reach the Castle, and the second at the lower end of the Royal Mile, not far from Holyrood. Either will serve you well.

I purchased an relatively inexpensive off-the-rack daywear jacket from Hector Russell and like it quite a lot. I just wish they had more options to select from as I'd happily get another one. I got mine via their on-line website, but they carried the same jackets in their stores in Edinburgh and Inverness when I was over there last summer.

I was impressed with Duncan Chisholm's in Inverness. I'd be happy to buy a kilt there. Hector Russell has changed ownership for sure.

I suppose you'll go to Culloden; it is a special place. If you do, don't miss the Clava Cairns just SE of it (you could almost walk). Do get over into the western highlands if you can. Some of the small coastal towns in Scotland are superb.

I am not sure about Hector Russell, but everything else you say is bang on.
