    Can't find a belt...

Ok, I admit it, I like to eat and it shows.

I understand I have to wear a kilt high (on or above the navel) but that also means I gotta find a belt that will fit there too. I'm not having ANY luck with that.

I've found a few places that sell custom sized kilts that will fit me, but does anybody know where I can get a "fat bastard" size (~57") belt. Gotta be at least 2" wide.

Kilt store has this belt (no picture so you might want to call them) but it says it comes in "extra large". I looks like "large" goes up to 50" so XL might get to 57". You also get a nice discount if you use the link at the top of the forum to access their web site.

If that doesn't work, you might try Home Depot's work belts. A couple of our members have bought one and dyed them and they look pretty good. Another member uses what looks like a weight lifting belt.

If none of these options help you, send me a PM with details of what you are looking for. I might be able to put something together for you. Might could even arrange for a matching sporran strap. I'd be glad to try and help you.

I'm not sure how long they go to-but police duty belts make an excellent kilt belt-good leather-and the conventioanl buckle can be changed for something more interesting.

I have black and brown ones, to suit kilt.

I bough my belt from Dangerous Threads and it's great. It's 2 inches thick, and he custom made it for me. You can have any size made. Mine cost $25.

might want to look into making your own. Find a local leather shop and look for belt blanks. They usually come very long so you can cut it to your needs. I made one a year or so ago. Just buff leather and some black dye. It was really simple and much cheaper.

The problem is the leather - at 57" you're pushing the limit of the hides ('cos you have to add about another 3"-4" for the buckle turn), although you can get longer ones out of some butts. Width isn't so much of a problem, although many belts are conditioned by the available buckles.

Weaver Leather of Mount Hope, Ohio, does cut up hides into mail order straps for belts and some of them are pretty long. You could give them a call. If you've got somebody who could make up the strap into a belt, you'd be well away.

An option would be to splice a few belt blanks together into a "Ranger-style" belt, where there are additional plaques of leather interspersed along the length, and the buckle turnover and belt tongue are not integral to the belt itself - they're stitched-on additions.

One splices straps to make reins for driving harness. For a belt, one could make the splice into a feature (say, at centre back) - the stitching should look like a saltire encased in a rectangle, quite appropriate for wearing with the kilt, I'd say.

The biggest belt I've seen is at Lowes ... 2 3/4 inch oil stained work belt. Makes a dandy kilt belt and can be cut to the proper length.

Mattg, thanks for the link! I just bought one of his (or her) 2" brown belts. I have been lookin for a wider brown belt for some of my kilts and this should be perfect, and the right price!
