    Casual shirts with kilts

    Hello all,

The summers get so hot and humid around the Great Lakes, that I can't bear a long sleeved shirt. Unfortunately, I can't bear to look like an abomination either, so: what options do we have?

A t-shirt is certainly acceptable when competing in the Highland Games, but is it too casual for, say, going out to TGIFriday's or the town festival?

How about a solid color polo shirt? My thought here is that the presence of a collar would make it more acceptable. Or would that look lame?

Polo shirts work fine; you can even get some with embroidered clan badges on them.

You can wear a t-shirt if you like. A kilt is a garment of clothing not a costume. Personally, I prefer to wear short sleeved collared shirts with my kilts. Either a polo or a button up. I went out with my brother one night and we where in our Gunn kilts and he looked at me and said, "You look dressy." I really wasn't, just a nice casual.

I think polo shirts and henleys are perfect for the casual kilted look. A safari style button down shirt looks awesome as well.

Just wear whatever you would normally wear for casual wear. I like the safari shirts too, and t-shirts. But I wear them with jeans and stuff, too. Just make sure the color of your shirt works with the kilt.

I'll echo what's already been said... the kilt is a garment, not a costume. Wear what you think works. I've been known to wear black t-shirts with my black stewart tartan kilt, and in my eye, it's a very casual, comfortable look.

I usually save the t-shirts for home. When I'm out to dinner, I generally wear a long-sleeved henley or a button-down dress shirt depending on the place.

Solid polo's are what I wear for those occasions and feel they are a great choice.

    Thanks for the replies!
I've been secure enough in myself to wear my kilt out and about; now I'll be confident that I'm not detracting from its spirit!

Wear what makes you feel comfortable with what is appropriate to your surroundings. Just look at this picture, we have an eclectic assortment of shirt styles.

I am wearing a dark blue Boston University Polo but I am also wearing low-cut boots, so what I choose to wear may be OK for my taste, but others may find the boots lacking taste.
