Christmas Party attire help?
Okay guys and girls I need an opinion here. My wife has her office Christmas party this coming Friday. I am pretty sure I know what I am going to wear, but I thought I would throw it out anyway.
I am going with the:
16 oz Ancient Watson kilt
matching flashes
Charcoal hose
dress sporran
the charcoal tweed argyle
black oxfords
But here is the tricky part. I was thinking of wearing the new cashmere charcoal (matches the jacket perfectly) sweater vest instead of the tweed waistcoat. I know the waistcoat is the ideal thing to wear, but the level of formality at these things goes from evening gowns to suits with flames up the side (!?!). However, I tried the vest last night, and despite the lack of silver buttons in the front, the outfit looked really sharp and was very comfortable.
Any initial thoughts?
I will try and get a pic or two tonight to show the visulas and see if opinions differ. In the meantime, here is a poor photoshopped version, but imagine a different sporran and that the vest actually matches the grey of the jacket

Hanging mistletoe from the sporran at an office Christmas party is probably not a good idea. In a bar later -- that could work!

Colin,
At first I thought a sweater under a "suit style coat" would be too casual plus the fact that I've never been too crazy about sweaters under coats.
After chewing on it a bit, I started to visualize that the sweater vest gives the same visual context as a waistcoat would.
I'd say go for it. But you may want to use a neck tie that incorporates a color from the kilt to tie the top and bottom together visually.
Not an educated opinion, just what I feel right now. Have a great time!

I like the outfit as well, but are the jacket sleeves too long or is it my eyes?

I rather like the outfit as it is, although a black sporran might be better. I do agree a different colored tie would tie the outfit together better, say in a blue or green to match the kilt.

Nice look. Nothing wrong with a sweater under a jacket like that (it's not a suit coat; it's tweed.), and I wear one often whether kilted or not.
I would prefer a black sporran, though the brown fur is OK.

I wear sweater/jacket combinations a lot, expecially with kilts. I think it looks wonderful! Go for it.

Colin,
Tweed with a sweater/ sweater vest looks really good (though it will have a bit of an Academic-professor vibe). It will dial down the formality of the outfit. Based on how you describe the party, it sounds like just the thing.
