Which colour for a dayware jacket?

I think to order a dayware tweed Argyll jacket but I still hesitate over the choice of colour matching my Grand Lodge of Scotland tartan (see picture below). Having already a black Prince Charlie jacket, I tought that a bit clear tweed (lovat green or highland green for exemple) would offer a better contrast for daywear. But a charcoal grey would possibly be more versatile, especially for lesser formal evening dress...?
What's the advice of the rabble?

Grey is a very versatile colour and will never clash with shirts or ties.

I often wear a navy blue tweed or a bright green woollen jacket.

I think the pertinent question here is whether you're looking for something strictly for day wear, or whether you want it to work for evening wear (albeit less formal) as well.

If strictly for day wear, I would go with a Lovat blue or Lovat green, or pretty much any lighter, earthier colour. These are firmly in the category of day wear, and in my opinion look much more suitable for wearing outside (say, for a Highland Games or other outdoor event) than anything in grey. But they would be inappropriate in the evening.

A grey/charcoal jacket would be OK during the day as well as the evening, but (again, in my opinion) would not really be the best choice for either. It has the advantage of being able to satisfy both requirements (i.e. day or evening), but wouldn't be my first pick.

If you can only afford one jacket, then the grey is fine. If you can do two jackets, it might be best to have a good day wear jacket (lighter colour or earthy) and a good evening jacket (dark, as in black).

Grey will always look good with any tartan and almost any event, and does double as a semi-dress jacket color for non-black tie dressy evening or day events. Personally grey/charcoal would be (and indeed was) my first non-barathea jacket/waistcoat purchase. Just about any other color tweed can be worn with just about any other tartan (within reason now guys) as remember the true highlander is not particularly worried about matchy-matchy things, at least not as much as many of us yanks, myself included. Personally I've also a nice light Lovat green tweed, midnight navy blue Harris tweed, and olive with navy box check Cheviot tweed jacket waistcoat sets, and am now looking for something in the brown or tan range to cover all the color palette bases, so to speak, that might look good with my various tartans in modern, ancient, muted, and weathered colorways.

Choose something in a color that you will feel comfortable wearing, and it should look fine with just about any tartan out there, so long as you wear it properly and with pride and confidence. Enjoy.

I think there is a misconception that green/blue/brown daywear tweed jackets are unsuitable for informal evening wear. In Scotland, any of the many 'daywear' tweeds are suitable at any time providing it is not an occasion or event requiring formal evening wear. Gray is fine if you like it, but it is no more formal for THCD than any other tweed.

Thank goodness, sense at last! Why stick with boring greys and the "regulation" charcoal when there are so many varieties of greens and browns of dozens of combinations and shades to choose from! As for me lately I've found myself staying away from wearing the charcoal tweed and tend to wear a brown argyll or my lovat blue. Something like this:

is what I tend to wear these days, I must agree with others who say as far a tweed goes one tweed is no more formal than any other. So wear the tweed you like, whatever colour you like. I see nothing wrong with grey tweed if that is what you like, but there are other colours out there.
