Say I want a black X-Kilt and add fabric that has fire flames on it to show as it "Opens"
would you make the X-kilt normaly and add the flames fabric over the "Inside under" fold of the pleat? or do you cut out the inside fold and replace it with the flames fabric?
Seems if the flame or the tartan fabric isn't too thick, you could just layer it.

Tartan Tess, I figured you would just embroider the flames on after the kilt was made.

I have seen it done both ways -- either an overlay or seamed in as a single layer. With the 16 oz (?) wool Cthulhu fabric, I suspect a graded seam would be the best choice. You'd have to be careful when pressing but I think an overlay approach would just be too thick and the pleats would splay out at rest.
