Daywear question
Hi all
I have been asked to be at my niece's baptism on the 24th of this month in and I quote "All your highland finery." My question then becomes this, do you think I should dress for daywear semi-formal, Argyle, tie, semi-dress sporran etc. or should I wear the Prince Charlie, bow tie and dress sporran?
I know that strictly speaking I should be in daywear semi-formal, and a Prince Charlie should be reserved for evening black tie events, however I think my brother and my sister in law may be expecting the Prince Charlie.
So what would you do?

I would dress to the level of everyone else, so-to-speak. You mentioned "Argyle" as an option. I think I would do that, with the fur dress sporran.

I'm assuming they've seen you in various levels of dress if you think they're expecting the PC. I'd ask them how they're dressing becuase you did not want to over/under do it.
Personally, I'd go with the semi-formal myself, but that's just me.

Daywear semi formal, absolutely.
You wouldn't wear a tuxedo to a baptism, so the same logic applies to the PC.
You will still wow them with your day wear.

Thanks guys that was what I was thinking, it's just that I think they want the P.C. I will talk to them about it.

As a churchman with a fair amout of experience here, I would advise that this is semi formal, the equivalent of a suit and tie, definitely not tuxedo. That said, different congregations have a different worship culture when it comes to attire, but wearing either Argyll, black or tweed, with a tie will suit no matter what the climate. Dress sporran if you like plus flashes and you should be a welcome addition to the entire worship experience.
Peace to you,
Chris

Sounds like your brother is adjusting to your kilt wearing. Good for him! Congratulations on the Christening.

I'm somewhat in agreement with the folks who are saying the Argyll would be the "correct" thing to wear to a daywear formal event. However, if they are wanting you to wear the PC, then that's what you should wear. My reasoning is that it is their event. Even if you are overdressed compared with what everyone else is wearing, I think it would mean a lot to them if you wore your very best-especially as they request it. I have to wonder though, is this the same set of folks that gave you the pants?

Yes, find out what they would like you to wear. Then wear that. It will make their day!
