    do ladies wear kilt pins?

I am in the process of getting my Irish tartan skirt and since it's a wrap-around style with buckles, does that mean I should be searching around for a kilt pin to secure the bottom side?

Just not sure if ladies wear kilt pins Dont want to show up looking silly at any events!

correction: My "noobness" has been corrected. Im glad you let me know not to pin it to the under apron otherwise I would have. Yikes.

A pin? Sure. Secure? No. The pin merely goes on the outer apron to decorate it. Your modesty is protected by the wide overlap of the two aprons. Were you to pin it together, we could almost guarantee rips and disasters.

Ooooooooooh look what a noob I am. I always thought the pin was to prevent any potentially embarassing encounters with wind gusts!

Since when the Ladies are asking men for advice/approval?

If you like it, wear it. I just hope you will not pin it through the apron and under apron. Kilt pin is there just for better look and extra weight (and not to secure aprons)

Well, I think the idea is the weight of the pin keeps the apron down.

In reality, it's more the overlap of the aprons of the modern kilt that protect one's modesty in most breezes - in a full-on gale, you'd best get in out of the wind! Best to keep at least one hand free when gusts are expected.

From what I've read (I think it was another thread here on XMarks), older kilts didn't have a full under-apron, and thus needed someting to serve as a closure. That's why some military kilts have the ribbons and/or rosettes going up the right-hand/opening edge of the top apron (carrying on the tradition).

As far as ladies wearing kilt pins: in my book, ladies are free to wear whatever they choose on their clothing.

I don't see why not, I'm sure they were common on girls kilt-skirts when I was a child. I was always taught (by my father who was advised by his kilt-maker at Peter Henderson's in Renfrew Street, Glasgow) that a kilt-pin was superfluous with a sporran on a man's kilt. Furthermore, I personally don't like putting pins into the fabric of my kilts.

All the lady pipe band members, that I have met, wear kilt pins.

All the ladies that wear a man's style kilt, that i have met, wear kilt pins.

Some of the ladies that wear a ladies' style kilt or a kilt skirt, that I have met, wear a kilt pin.

    Regards
