    Donaldsons of Crieff

Has anyone ever purchased a kilt from Donaldsons of Crieff? This Scottish firm has been around for some time, but I have never heard much about any of their products.

Despite being a regular visitor to Crieff, I have never actually seen any business premises for this firm. They are evidently situated on the High Street but don't appear to run a retail shop. The only highlandwear shop I know of in Crieff is House of Scotland (Highland wear) which carries the usual range of kilt-relared items, sporans, PC's, ghillie brogues etc. although nothing more specialised. Sorry I can't be more help. Donaldson is a name associated with one-time proprietors of Crieff Hydro but I don't know if there is any connection there.

I have just checked their website:

    http://www.donaldsons-of-crieff.com/default.asp

Some of the prices seem quite reasonable. Tartan waistcoats, on the bias, made to measure for £100 does not strike me as being too excessive.

    Trews News

I'd be cautious about ordering their "trews". Proper trews, unlike those shown on their web site, do not have a seam on the outside of the leg. With trews the tartan matches on the inseam, which is why they cost more to tailor than ordinary trousers. Here they are charging more for trousers than trews, which seems to be contrary to my experience.

If you are looking for proper trews, and not "plaid golfing pants", then I'd suggest sticking with Stewart Christie in Edinburgh, or Costello & Son in Ilford, north London.

Meyer & Mortimer in London know how to make proper trews, and just recently made a pair for a friend cut on the bias! I have yet to see them, but I understand they are spectacular!

From their "about us" section on the website:

"Just a wee note, if you are visiting Crieff to look at our shop we don't have one, but do come any way you will not be disappointed in the scenery or the welcome you get in Crieff."

I don't know if that would have any influence in your decision.

Did ya happen to look at the "Jacobite Waistcoat" I would love to have something like that made from a Soft RED Leather for my "Santa Kit"
to wear over my Dress White Jacobite Silk Shirt.

I have to try to get a pattern for that waistcoat. Then a tailor to make it,
I think that would be a grand kit indeed.

Check out your next big Highland games-- not only should you be able to find a pattern for a peitean (or Jacobite vest as some call it), you will probably find a craftsman who can make it for you out of leather.
