David | That's what I was thinking too. It has a respectful history for formal attire and nothing looks manlier than a horse hair sporran.

There is also the more rare feathered sporran (mallard duck or pheasant). I know there is a thread on here about them...

I think you should pick a sporran that you like. I personally like the look of seal, but being in the states would have to get faux seal from the likes of L&M. Always curious if the faux seal looks close to the real thing.

I have to really thank all of you who replied so quickly! I appreciate your help, and will feel much more comfortable about my wearing of a rather understated (read "plain") black leather sporran with my mess dress jacket, which, like all Air Force uniforms, is quite NOT flashy! I've only seen one kilt on my cruises, so I expect to get a few comments, admiring, and envious! Thanks again for the comments, and especially the pictures...It's great having such a friendly, informative forum to call on!!!

I would only say that for formal wear it really should be a fur or hair sporan. As has been said elsewhere, however, there are no rules but others will wonder if you had forgotten to pack your dress sporan.

I must say that 99.9% of the people you meet anywhere will NOT now what is "proper" for "dress" in a kilt. Wear black to match your jacket, and you will be fine!

I have a faux seal fur sporran from L&M, it is quite nice, nice feel and color , it does not look "fake"
