From my experience on here and in the real world [albeit Navy vice AF] wearing the kilt with a uniform mess dress jacket is acceptable in all branches of the US Military. It may not be explicitly in the regulations but it is seen as an acceptible variation.

To the main point of the thread I agree that a heavily metaled [que Nighthawk with some spiked metal sporran that doubles as a mace head ] leather sporran will work nicely in lieu of a fur one.

When I first started wearing a kilt I got a black leather one as it was the one I could afford it at the time. We all start somewhere, here is what my formal outfit looked like then

After some time and some other purchases this is what my formal outfit looks like now.

Go with what you can, at some point you can add to your wardrobe if you wish.

Anyone that doesn't think fur is manly needs to see a good sheepskin sporran!

Ah, no, not so much. For the Marine Corps, the point to uniform is that it is uniform. One is either in uniform or not. Variation, except as explicitly provided, is not permitted. Since kilts are not mentioned, they are not worn as part of any Marine uniform.

Geoff beat me to it. In the Corps, one would never wear a kilt because it is not regulation uniform dress. In fact, you'd probably get written up for wearing it with uniform articles of clothing. The Corps is very particular about unifrom regs, and that's one reason Marines always look good.

Having said that, I have seen a local fellow who had a dress blue blouse cut down to kilt length and modified with a sporran cut away that looked really good. If you remove the military buttons and replace with just about any brass button (to keep it legal), and not wear USMC badges, etc,. you'd be fine. But only as civilian attire, not as military uniform dress.

The blue mess jacket can also be worn as civilian attire if you remove all insignias and replace the buttons. This I believe is true for all military clothing items.

AF regulation permits an organization commander to authorize his/her subordinates to wear non-standard items of clothing. So, a kilt could be worn as part of the mess dress uniform, if one's commander permits it.

Wow, that was a really nice "starter" outfit!!! I like the fancy new hose, of course, but I have to say I prefer the Gunn tartan. (biased..? maybe... no, grateful that I have a great looking tartan!). You're a great source of inspiration for us newbies, McMurdo! Cheers! Michael

This is from my best friend's wedding, last summer. I wore fur, he wore black leather. I thought we both looked about right.

NOTE: The black leather sporran is, to date, a one-of-a-kind Ferguson Britt. If you like it, ask Matt for a Ben Ledi Beag, and I'm sure that Lamar would be delighted to make a second!

As Bruce Springsteen would say

Long, dark, shiny and black.

That will get you where you need to go...

I agree with many in this thread, a 'hunter' style sporran is not only acceptable, but great for formal wear. The pipe band that I played in wore hunter style sporrans with their PC's, and it looked great.
