First time kilted at work tomorrow
Tomorrow I'll be going to work kilted for the very first time, since it's Tartan Day. When I submitted my proposal re wearing a kilt to work (twice a year -- Tartan Day and the feast day of St. Andrew), I was told that I'd need to be "professional" and I couldn't "distract others from work."
On Thursday, I reminded my supervisor that I'd be kilted Monday, and she once again reminded me of the whole professional thing and not being a distraction. I started to think that if it's this big a pain in the @ss that I'd just show up in normal work attire.
But I'm not going to do that.
Do I go with...
a) black polo, black socks, black dress shoes and my casual Pride of Scotland kilt, OR
b) Macduff 8-yarder, blue socks, black shoes, grey Argyll, shirt and tie?
In other words, do I dress to the nines to make a point, or do I wear the tartan a little more low-key, like it's not such a big deal?
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

What is your normal business attire? Casual or coat & tie? I would match that level of expected dress.

Ditto that^^^^
That's the answer.

Beat me to it! Match as closely as you can to your normal work attire, I would though err on the side of more dressy just so the powers that be don't have any room to complain. I do find a nice polo and a kilt to be quite professional though. Maybe you could forgo the jacket and just go with a shirt and tie or maybe a vest along with the shirt and tie.
A la this look http://www.albanach.org/. I hope Matt doesn't mind me directing you to this photo.

Update: My usual work attire is a polo or sweater and khakis. I rarely wear a tie, but every now and then, I'll throw a blazer on to dress up a button-down and slacks.
My wife thinks I should wear the Argyll with a shirt and tie -- that way, no one can even think of saying I wasn't dressed "professionally."
I'm inclined to lean that way, but I'm still open.

I would go with a dress shirt, tie and a waist coat. Not as dressy as the Argyll but still professional.

I went into work kilted for close to three years with nary a complaint. I normally wore an Argyll with a tie, the thing is I was the best dressed person at work and was told that by numerous co-workers. Never did anyone say I did not look professional. I was told that I brought a breath of fresh air to the office and that meant a lot to me. I'd say go for the Argyll with shirt and tie it will set the precedent that the next time you are kilted at work you will project a professional image.

Since this is a first time and an infrequent event I'd go top of the line too. Best kilt, best look.
I think one thing that helps kilts at work is what Glen said - have them be sharper looking than what others are wearing.
Enjoy the day.
