Flash alternatives
If you didn't want to wear flashes (bear with me here), what alternatives might there be to dress up your hose? Has anybody seen or done anything creative/elegant/awesome to their hose in place of flashes?

Garter ties are ace...

Hose tops are another option although usually worn by pipers under white spats I believe... Not sure how they'd work without the spats though.
Best Regards John

Skye Highland Outfitters (and perhaps others) offers Cuff Toppers that are colorful knit rings that only go over the cuff (folded over part) of the hose. They enable you to jazz up multiple pairs of plain colored hose instead of having to buy multiple pairs of fancy ones.

Agreed. That's what I wear most of the time.

Now this question is just because it sounds like something my crazy artist Mom might try... anything involving beads, braided/embossed leather, or other cloth alternatives?

Traditionally speaking- Noooooooo.
...does that mean you can't do it? Also no.

This thread is borne of an overarching concept that came to me as I indulged in a late-night beer and a cigarette, whilst watching the stars...
Modern casual kilts are alright, I guess. But I'm interested in a "new" classic kilt look, a modern look built around a traditional 4-8 yard wool tartan kilt.
Hose, shoes, flashes, sporran, vest, belt, jacket, bonnet... but not in any way the tradition PC's, Balmoral's, Argyle's, flashes, or indeed sporrans. How to dress up a kilt to at least semi-formal, maintaining the spirit of traditional components, whilst using new and exciting designs, or alternatives.

I've considered making/converting some flashes from chainmail before. Does that count as alternative? You can even get the links done in coloured metal, or if you do it yourself done in patterns to your liking.
