    ghillie shirts

found lately (of course in Highland Store ) a shirt named ghillie shirt. For me it look a little bit weird.
I'm asking U - people who know what is all about - what occasion one can wear this kind of shirt (pubs, family meetings, walking with dog???).

I don't know traditional meaning of wearing kilts. maybe if I knew, I wouldn't ask stupid questions
if it's really stupid - sorry...

    Ado:

First off, welcome aboard! Secondly, they always told us that the only stupid question was the one you didn't ask. With that said, here's my quick and relatively uninformed take on the ghillie shirt.

The ghillie shirt is a traditional look, but not one I could carry off. Pour1Malt does it, and with style and verve. I prefer a collarless shirt, personally, that buttons down. Note: while a ghillie shirt with a kilt is just fine, a ghillie suit with a kilt should be avoided!

I wear one, but only with a great kilt.

For one thing, they're hot. I usually wear an oxford shirt in a complementory color, or a short-sleeve uniform shirt; IMHO much cooler and sharper looking.

I bought one when I got my 1st kilt. I thought you were supposed to wear one with a kilt. Now thanks to this forum I know that's not necessarily so. I wear regular modern shirts with my kilt & reserve the gillie for Highland games.

If this is the men's department, where are the kilts?

I am betting that with all of my dreadlocks and my beardlocks, since I look out of place and strange to begin with, that I could pull off the look just fine.

I'd look like a short Scots pirate.

Did any one else have the movie "Princess Bride" pop into your head when you read this post? You know, 'The Dread Pirate Roberts"?

ALL the time little kids point at me and say "Mommy! A pirate!" (Or daddy on some occasions) The best time was in the hospital after my wife's surgery. A whole bunch of hospitalised kids got to see a "skirt wearing pirate." Because I seem to personify 'pirate' in the minds of so many little kids, and more than a few adults for some reason, I would be willing to bet a bottle of grog that I could pull off the Jacobite shirt look like few others could.

    That pretty much covers it.
