    Hose Dilema

Here's my ungoing problem since I started wearing kilts, I am 6'4" tall and wear size 15 shoes. I have shopped around the internet and at celtic events looking for size 15 hose. I know I could pay to have custom ones made but it's a little rich for the pocketbook. The closest I could get is from "Gaelic" brand hose where they go up to size 14. I have some but they're still a bit of a stretch. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

You might try J. Higgins. They advertise some hose that fit sizes 13 - 15 for $60. I cannot vouch for them first-hand, however, since I do not wear hose that large. You might call and talk with them.

Is it acceptable to you to buy size 12 - 14 and simply not turn them down as much as most folks do, ie have a smaller cuff?

    In any case good luck!

Bowmore hose from the House of Cheviot are my best suggestion.

I wear US13 shoes, sometimes 14s, and have never had any problem with the various House of Cheviot hose styles I have ordered in their Large size, and some of them are too large for my feet in fact. Unless you have a really wide foot I can't imagine them being a problem. All of them have very long bodies to them so turnover tops should not be a problem either (I am 6'5" tall too). You also might try looking online for shooting socks which usually come in colors like kilt hose but sometimes in larger sizes.

Any House of Cheviot hose in size XL will most likely fit you. If you have wide calves (say wider than 16") you may want to look at the Skye or Harris lines as these are made for large calves. But if it is just foot size and length you are worried about, any style in XL should work.

Their XL fits shoe size 13-14.5 (UK) which would equate to a US 14-15.5. The approximate height of the hose would be 18" to 20" (depending on just where you fold down the cuff).

You can buy House of Cheviot hose through the Scottish Tartans Museum gift shop.

    Re: Hose Dilema

I wear a size 15 as well and have had no issue with the House of Cheviot hose fitting me. I also have somewhat larger than normal calves but they are quite comfortable in them. I'm just a tad over 6-5 and these hose also have plenty of height for turn-over which is where I have generally had issues with less expensive hose that have fit my feet well. It seems that while some cheaper hose fit in the foot the leg itself isn't tall enough to give a good turn over at the top.
