How much should I set my sight on?

OH no! With the impeccable logic that Detroit Pete used (when confronted with two kilts, buy em both!) I really must set my sights on the next step in my Kilt Kloset.

My next two (unless side tracked) shall be a Lindsay Modern in 16 oz, and drum roll a 16 oz Birse. Since I want to be able to wear these for years and years they will be wool (of course), more than likely Scottish mill (that is unless there is a really high quality US or Canadian mill that will do a small yardage order).

Your help is needed in the following areas:

    1. For both I would like to have these as tanks; how much yardage should I set my sights on for a full 8 yard tank and a matching fly? 9 10 11 yards? I am not exactly a small guy 5'10, 240, 44" at the belly, so does that make any difference?

    2. For the Birse; I have done some investigation and have come to the conclusion this will have to be custom woven. Which mill would be 1) cost effective. 2) How much should I have woven, for both a 8 yard tank and fly, and while I am at it should I go for enough for a lighter 4 yard Box pleat? I know this is not going to be in-expensive, so going into this should I plan for enough material for the future?

As aways, your help is deeply appreciated.

    haha cdn, good call.

For an 8 yd tank and fly plaid, you're looking at about 5.5 yards of double width material (4 for the kilt, about 1.5 for the plaid). With your measurements, maybe 6 yards dw, to give an extra yard or so in the kilt.

    Rough estimate of course.

Depending on your hip size, a "full 8 yard tank" may actually be more than 8 linear yards. Ask your kiltmaker? consult The Book? or wait a bit, and an expert will come along.

A lot depends on the sett of the tartan. I made an 8 yard for my 39.5 inch hips, and I felt that 8 yards was just right.

A regular fly plaid runs 1 meter to 4 feet square. Also, consider one like Matt is wearing in the pix from Atlanta Burns supper. It's about 2 yards square, and looks terrific.

On the custom weave, I'd order through my kilt maker or Matt at the STM. ScotWeb can do it, too, they can handle the fabric and the kilt.

I feel good, I actually got that one. I am still fuzzy about the rubber chicken, but I'm proud I got the horse one.

Being as you're in Alb, this is absolutely sound advice.

I got it! Maybe that's a sign that I spend too much time here.

Firstly--ugh --using my screen name and the word 'logic' in the same sentence does not bode well for your grasp on reality man! :-)

When it comes to tanks--and mind you, I've yet to buy own of my own--I think that the name that comes to my mind first is Matt Newsome.

I've been to the store in NC a few times and have read as much of his writings as I can. Again, I do not know from first hand, but if I were going to pony up the investment in a tank, I'd call Matt first. My wife and I are nearing on our 20th anniversary and I've been planning the whole-ball-o'wax for it. She's never seen me in a PC all decked out, but for her...on THAT day, I'll do it and most likely in a handmade Newsome Tank.
