If you look at a number of photos of HRH the Duke of Rothesay, you'll see that he frequently wears a brown sporran with black brogues. I rather like the look.

And you also see this in photos of the various Scottish regiments over the years as well. They always wore their issue black brogues but various dress for some would include brown leather sporrans. Offhand, I don't recall about their belts but seem to recall them usually being black. Years ago when I was playing with a pipe band, we did this same thing with various dress modes, always maintaining black shoes and our black belts, even with a brown sporran with the daywear green Argyll jacket. At the time I never questioned it but think it looked fine.

I must confess that over the years of playing solo I've gotten stuck in the mode of matching all of my leather (shoes, sporran and belt). Primarily brown for daywear/casual and black for evening or a more formal setting, like a wedding. This may be more because of our fashion sense of matching shoes and belts with "regular" clothes than anything else, IDK.

Most pictures of Prince Charles I have seen show him wearing a waistcoat with Argyll jacket, obviating the belt. Otherwise I can only recall him wearing a sweater without a visible belt.

Thanks, McMurdo. In that thread I saw 2 photos of him as an adult and 1 as a child casually wearing just a shirt without a waistcoat/jacket or sweater and not wearing a belt in any of those. I suspect that these photos were captured at quite casual moments, possibly where the sweater or weskit had been removed.

I would also suspect that Charles largely adheres to the Old World sense of propriety that a man is not "dressed" in shirt-sleeves alone, at least in public. Makes we want to get matching weskits for my Argyll/Crail jackets!
