    Kilt and braces?

how odd would it be to sew brace buttons into a kilt, then wear it with braces?

Do you mean like suspenders? There was an episode of Monarch of the Glen where Hector had his kilt held up by suspenders. I personnaly think it may look a little odd, but than again it may look good with contemporary kilts (UK, AK, etc). Hard to say.

It would just depend on if you can pull off the braces look.
I think it would be fine if you were wearing a jacket but the more traditional kilts I think would look odd with a belt and braces.

    braces...

As Colin noted with "Monarch", I have seen it done before, but I would advise against it -- to wear them under a jacket and waistcoat (vest to Americans) is one thing, but as Miah stated, it doesn't look right to see someone wearing braces with a belt, and braces really aren't meant for kilts to begin with -- they are really for trousers.

As an aside, I love braces and wear them on a regular basis -- they look even better wi' a bow tie!

    Cheers,

    T.

Braces/suspenders with a KILT??!!! No! Please tell me you are joking?! They might just be OK if worn out of sight under a jacket, or whatever, perhaps for some medical reason when a belt cannot be worn but, please, not otherwise!

As for braces/suspenders WITH A BELT.....!!! One or the other, if you must, but not both together.

Kilts, at least well-made kilts, are tailored to fit the body and usually do not need even a belt. Belts are usually worn because our kilts look better with them - they have an 'unfinished' appearance without a belt. Braces/suspenders are designed to hold up a garment that does not fit closely to the body for some reason - kilts are not normally built like that!

    Braces

Though qestionable with some modern kilts, or if in shirt sleeves-a sound military precedent to ensure correct hang of kilt. More so if wearers body shape such that relying only on the straps might allow it to move-sag slightly.

So there is no traditional reason for not wearing braces.

Must admit... I'm personally not real hip on the image! Hector was an old f_rt!!!

The ONLY time I've ever done it was when I was doing some carpentry work on a deck and wearing a workman's UtiliKilt. I had on those "Tape Measure" suspenders and a "This Old House" t-shirt as a joke.

I guess that if you have it under a jacket or sweater, it won't really matter.

The real question is, why would you possibly need suspenders (braces) on a kilt? If it needs them... it probably diesn't fit right!

    Good morning gents,

Just one of the odd thoughts that go through my head. Thought I'd toss it out there and let get kicked around a bit. I wouldn't care for the look.

    Thanks for the input.

I went saw a man wearing bright red braces with a kilt today.
the guy was wearing a red kilt and somehow he pulled the look off I must say. I did not notice the Braces at first almost.
