Kilt Care and Feeding

Not that I've splattered mustard and ketchup all over my kilt, but I'd like to ask about the proper care of my SWK Irish Saffron. I see that the tag says machine wash cold (30c) and iron, or dry clean. I'll opt for the cleaners, but will I have any problems with them keeping my pleats, pleaty. I'd imagine they might charge more for a kilt than a pair of pants or a skirt.

Past, that, I promise to take it for a walk whenever it wants to go -- which is quite often these days

I never trust the cleaners with my pleats. I took my beater kilt to the cleaners twice. Two different shops, same messed up results. If you're concerned about keeping your pleats nice and evenly spaced, I would do them yourself. Takes longer, but you don't have to worry about some yahoo screwing them up.

Whether you do it yourself or take it to the cleaners, be sure to baste the pleats beforehand. Just to keep them neat. Barb posted a great tutorial here.

You'll find many on this site don't send a kilt to a dry cleaner. Instead they clean it themselves. Read this post on cold water washing:

If the tag says to machine wash, I assume it's an acrylic (standard) model, correct? Just do what the tag says- throw it in the washer and hang dry it. The pleats will stay in just fine. I have done it with mine on two occasions. The acrylic is machine washable.

I wash my Stillwaters regulary in cold water with either woolite or liquid laundry soap and hang them up to dry and run an iron over them

As to feeding I put mine out every night after a warm dish of milk lol

I have fed my Gordon a couple of times with wee drops of a good single malt. Instead of growing along with me the ungratefull kilt has decided to shrink

Definitely wash it yourself!!! Expensive or not, poly or wool, the best care will come from you!!

Remember, it's important to feed and walk your kilt on a regular basis, not just when it wants to. It gets very surly and pouts otherwise!!
