Honestly I think it would look like a dog`s breakfast neither fish nor fowl. I would suggest first purchasing a kilt in your family tartan, then at some time in the future you could buy an all black kilt. Something like the Black Isle tartan, or perhaps a Black Shadow tartan from Stillwater.

No sir, I don't like it.

I'm with McMurdo. Get two kilts instead. Just sounds like a patchwork type of thing that in my mind, just isn't going to look good in any setting. Just my opinion though.

Have one made that has a detachable front apron so one day you could wear black front and tartan rear and another day you could go all tartan. This could easily be done with PV fabrics so you ( hopefully ) run into trouble with colours fading at an uneven rate. As a matter of fact as I type this I do find myself intrigued by the idea and may try to make on up just to see how it looks 'cause I'm just that kind of guy!

I like the idea of the detachable front. However ask yourself what, or when your going to wear your kilt. If you want it only for special occasions and your getting a real $400+ kilt I wouldn't do it. If you want it for cassual, or every day wear get one of the cheap poly kilts and do it. though there's a deffenate different look when you walk to the kilts.

Being creative is fine but you will have to live with the result, and the result will make a statement. Wearing a kilt probably already makes a statement and so you have to ask yourself two questions. First, exactly what statements will I be making with this idea and second, can I live with the constant comments my two statements will start to receive

If you are happy with the answers go ahead. If not, stay with a more conventional kilt design

Either way I would not want to wear your kilt as, to me, it would look like McMurdo's "dog's breakfast"

Might work well for a modern kilt, but not a traditional one... Another idea for a modern one would be black with tartan in the pleats maybe
Note to self: Must remember the pleaty bit goes at the back...

    Re: Kilt Idea

There are a few modern kilt companies out there that do an all solid color kilt with the inside fold of the pleats in tartan so you get a "flash" of tartan when the wearer moves.

And I'm sure there are others. I think the biltkilt one is pretty cool!
God bless the kilted everywhere and all who see them!

The kilt! It gets in your blood and cannae be removed through medicine or magic.

    Re: Kilt Idea

It would cost a fortune and look silly. You can't have detachable aprons - that's not how kilts are made - all the internal strengthening would be lost.
