Judging by the picture, I think it would look good with a white shirt. Not so sure about a blue shirt. I own a Black Stewart and wore it with a maroon shirt today and thought that it helped make the red in the kilt look good without the shirt being too 'Hey, look at me, I'm bright red'.
But, were it me, I would go for the Johnny Cash look...I think you can't go wrong with it.

Don't think you'll find the black is that grim. Red and black happen to be our local small town high school colors so I was able to wear a high school logo hoodie with my black Stewart.

The blue and the yellow in the tartan give you other options.
One of the fun things I did when I got my first tartan kilt was just to experiment with how the shirts and vests I already had worked with it. Sometimes its surprising what works. Just holding up or trying on each item while you're kilted in the black Stewart will do the trick.
You might also check for any Clan Stewart websites and see how others dress with their black Stewart tartans.
Welcome aboard and enjoy. Used to live a bit east in Bristol...good to have kilts in Knoxville.

Youngman,
I'm not sure because your photo is very dark and fuzzy but is it possible that you have the Kilt on backwards.
The pleats go in the back.
If I'm mistaken, I'm sorry.
I usually let my Kilt stand on its own. If I match colors it is my shirt with my hose.
but what you have looks fine. Black goes with anything.

I apologize for the low quality of the picture. I haven't ironed the pleats down in far too long, I'm afraid that the ones near the side have started to pull towards the front. I think that's what you're seeing Wizard.
And, from reading the comments left by the rabble the whole wheel started turning last night. I figure I could neutralize the overall blackness of the whole affair by finding hose in roughly the same shade as the vest, a brown sporran/brown shoes. I think I could even do a light blue oxford shirt with a blue based tie if I brought in some blue flashes to highlight the right stripes in the sett. It seems to be all about breaking up the sharp contrast at the waist, and establishing a new dominate color scheme with brown and/or blue.
Hopefully, I can make enough money during the summer (grad student ) to pick up the necessary additions. My goal is make this kilt as versatile as possible until graduation and disposable income arrive.
Thanks again for all the advice.
