Kilt Maker advice

Good evening,

I am in Edinburgh visiting from Scotland hoping to purchase my first kilt. I know what a bespoke kilt costs but as I do not have that kind of money decided to go economic; still 100% wool, but economic. I decided against this as I wanted to stick to a traditional kilt.

I went to Geoffrey tailor to see what was available off the peg but they did not have my tartan.

On my way back to my hotel I came across Christopher Ross; Klassic Kilts near St. James Shopping Centre which do bespoke and for hire kilts. They had one in my size, in my tartan. It is I lighter weight. The material is woven by Locharron. The lady who helped me told me these were hand made in Scotland. It was 160 pounds so it had me wondering about it. It is almost 6 yards.

I got the feeling this was a non-toursit type shop as it was quite small and had a dozen off the peg kilts.

Can anyone offer me any advice?

PS: Some of the stitching had come undone and the lady told me she would have one of the kilt makers fix it and make sure everything was good as new.

IMHO, I think you have more data than the rest of us do. You have seen and handled the article in question. I presume you tried it on altho you did not mention it.

My advice, buy it if it pleases you. Keep looking if it bothers you in some way.

It sounds to me that you are not expecting to have a wardrobe full of kilts so I think you must be pleased with this one or you will be irked and eventually buy another.

On the other hand, if it fits, moves well, and is well made then by all means get it! and congrats

Thanks. I did try it on and it fits quite well. I think I may be worrying for nothing. I will be honest and say that I have 2 stipulation in my search; that is be genuine Scottish made, and it be hand made; essentially a proper kilt. Perhaps it is just my definition of genuine that has be guessing.

I purchased an off the rack IoS kilt from Marchbrae of Scotland...13 oz. 6 yd wool. It fits very well, and the workmanship, made in Scotland, is top notch. And, the online price was unbeatable. So, if you've actually seen it, felt it, tried it on, and it's your family tartan, then I'd go for it!

Small world literally! My friend back in Canada who grew up in Scotland just emailed me to tell me that her uncle's friend own a shop and I should go see him. The shop is the exact shop I have been asking about.

I become kilted this Wednesday!!!!

Hi,
If you take a walk down to the grassmarket you will see a shop directly opposite the junction at the bottom of the brae it is called McColl have a look in there they have some rubbish but sometime you come across the odd good kilt and they are mostly 1950 1960 style cloth.Some real cracker have been found there myself it just luck of the draw.
