    A Kilt & Tartan Encyclopedia/Dictionary

I'm looking for "The" book...the book that has it all...the Kilt and Tartan Bible so to say, but so far I didn't find anything like it

    Isn't something like this available?

If you only are going to own one book on tartan, make it Tartan: The Highland Textile by James Scarlett. It's available through the Scottish Tartans Authority web site, and I think also on www.Scotpress.com.

It contains all the tartan information that was in D. C. Stewart's The Setts of the Scottish Tartans , updated and corrected in light of later research done since that book's publication. It also has a whole slew of other tartans not included in that book.

James Scarlett is absolutely one of the top academics in tartan study alive today, and has written many books on the subject. But this one is his magnum opus.

Several books won't do any harm, but I was just wondering if there's a book with all the Kilt/Tartan info...including the accessories...old and new...the lot.

Remember that new tartans are being created and registered all the time, so any book will soon be incomplete. I see you are a member of the Scottish Tartans Authority. That is probably the most up to date source of registered tartans.
