Kilt too small - what to do...

I bought a kilt from another member, but it is too small! It's an SWK heavyweight wool one and it's absolutely gorgeous.

I'm a fat 32 and the kilt is a 30. Is there any way I can alter it to fit? Otherwise I'll have to list it on ebay.

Probably not because it would take quite a bit of work.

Note: I'm not saying it can not be done., but that it would take a good bit of work on the kilt that probably goes beyond moving the straps and buckles.

You might try the "non-invasive" treatment. Buy the requisite number of "kilt extender straps" ( 2 or 3 ) and see how it looks. It won't look as good as if it were the right size, but it will go around you. You can then embark on an exercise program and gauge the likelihood of slimming down sufficiently. Or you can just sell it.

Someone ought to make a graph of the available kilts and jackets, according to size. I suspect it would look like a pyramid. Luckily, most kilt wearers have plenty to eat and we tend to outgrow things.

You're a fat 32? Poor baby! Show of hands everybody else on this forum who would be happy to be a 32 waist again?

Anyway, MacLowlife has got yer solution: kilt extenders...seek and ye shall find 'em...Google is your friend (sometimes).

I don't think that I'm actually losing any weight but I've always ordered 36 waists and I'm getting down to the tightest notch on the straps right now...I may have to do the opposite and have my buckles moved back soon.

Best

Well, if you don't mind strap extenders, that would be fine.

I was thinking of how the Stillwater is constructed on that first reverse pleat at the underapron, and how it does not exactly line up with the top apron edge.

If you can not put the kilt on at the last hole of the strap as it is, you are probably going to have quite a wide strip of underapron showing.

That would be the main issue with the extenders.

I used to be a 30 waist until a couple of years ago, when I ballooned up to a 36 within literally a couple of months. It's really strange as my diet or living habits haven't changed. I can only assume it's my metabolism as I'm now in my latter-30's. Adopting a healthier lifestyle has brought me back down to my current 'fat' 32. I very much doubt I'll get back to my svelte 30 waist.

This is my main concern. I can fasten the buckle on the left but cannot get the strap on the right to even touch its buckle. If I use extenders I will definately have lots of under apron showing.

I was wondering if I could undo the last pleat on the left to give me that extra couple of inches without ruining the look of the kilt. I haven't had a proper look to see if this is viable - just an idea.

I think I understand what you mean about undoing the pleat to make the front apron wider. It doesn't look like that would work out too well because of the button hole for the strap, and a few other reasons.

I have the same tartan Stillwater by the way.
