Kilt tux without Argyle or Prince Charlie
If one was to wear a kilt to a formal, yet not super Scottish Formal event, such as Prom, would it be acceptable for one who does not own a kilt jacket to wear a regular tuxedo jacket?

Regular jackets, tuxedo or otherwise, tend to be far too long in the body. Personally, I think it would look silly. Far better to wear the tux jacket with the trousers that go with it and leave the kilt for another occasion.

....Or take a regular black jacket to a tailor to be converted into a kilt jacket.

Same here as per Chas.
I got a ex-hire Argyll from here. Half the price on new and the one I received had never been out on hire. The pockets were still stiched up and was brand new.

Better to be looked over than overlooked. Cock your hat, angles are attitudes.

As Chas has pointed out, a tux jacket won't look right. That said, most tux shops also rent Spencer jackets (which look like a Prince Charlie without the tails), and these are fine with a kilt.
Which ever you choose to wear, remember: NO WHITE SOCKS.

Don't know why, but I got the impression that there were financial or time constraints - foolish of me.
There are half a dozen good threads here about jacket conversions. At least one is, I believe, down loadable.
If nothing else, you will be able to give instructions to your tailor.

Four opinions: 3 from the UK and 1 from the USA. If you'd add a line saying where you live, it might make it easier for others to offer sage advice...

That exactly what I just did to a tux jacket I picked up at the thrift store, and it turned out very nice. I'll be wearing it (and my bride) to a dining out this Friday. I'll try to post a pic after.

Assuming you don't own a tux jacket and would be renting, I'll only point out that you can often rent (hire) a Prince Charlie jacket for about the same cost of renting a tuxedo jacket. So why not rent the style of jacket that works best with the kilt?
But barring that, I'll second Rathdown's suggestion of a Spencer jacket.

To pick up on what Chas said, "regular" jackets are made long to cover the seat of your britches, but on a kilt that's exactly where the pleats are that we've paid the big money for. It's sort of like going to the barber shop and getting a really good haircut, then putting a ball cap on your head.
