    Modern Kilt Jacket advice

    G'day Gang,

Just wanted to elicit a little advice from the guru's of highland fashion...

I currently own one black Argyll with waistcoat and am in the market for a contemporary kilt jacket like the ones St Kilda offer here:

    http://www.stkildaretail.com.au/shop...waistcoat.html

and the one Steve from Freedom Kilts offers as seen here:

    http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/a...606/index.html

Obviously my Argyll is my formal jacket, but I'm looking for a contemporary jacket for daytime wedding cum business wear.

Here's my query(s). What would you say is the best colour for a second jacket? Would a black jacket be more universally appropriate? Or would a brown (as seen in Steve's thread) be more useful? What about charcoal? Grey tweed??

Thanks for any ruminations and ideas.

    Scotty

Charcoal or grey tweed after the black, all are universal. You can get Black barathea without the shiny silver buttons and it still looks dressy in an argyll or similar jacket. Lovat blue also works well with nearly every tartan out there.

Charcoal Grey is going to work with most tartans and have a somewhat less severe, formal look than black.

The following is pretty subjective and just one opinion, but I think that black has a "formalizing" effect, so even if the cut of the jacket is less formal, the black cloth keeps it in a formal range. If you already have a formal look, Grey will widen the range you have to work with. Brown is one step softer than Grey and with the right tartan has a very laid back, but still "dressed" look. Lovat Blue is one of my favorite colors, but I don't think it works with as wide a range of tartans.
IMHO, if you have the black, formal end of the spectrum covered, the next step would be a charcoal grey, then if you could eventually add a brown jacket / sporran option as well you'd have a lot of the bases covered.

I have a Gray Braemar jacket which has seen me through many events when a PC would be too much, for me anyway, it has been the most versatile jacket and waistcoat in my closet. It always looks sharp and in place unless you are going to a Black Tie event it works for Day or Evening events.

I also have a Brown Argyll that works wonderfully for Day events, but I'm sure it would not work for anything else but casual day wear.

Lovat Blue as mentioned can look great again I find it is wonderful for day wear, as is Lovat Green, and I have seen these colours at Evening events as well.

I'd also say going through the 1 kilt 10 looks thread that Panache and I did a little while ago may be a good idea. In the long run the best thing to do is to pick a jacket that will see you through the most events, my experience is that the Gray Jacket and Waistcoat work best, looking at the options you provided the Wallace Jacket has chrome buttons much like your formal Argyll. Therefore I would say that the jacket from Freedom Kilts would be the way to go, it would give you more diversity in your wardrobe.

    2nd Jacket

IMHO a good second jacket would be a tweed in either brown or grey. I must say I find something odd about the "Wallace" jacket by St Kildaire. Seems to be too much the hybrid for my taste. Seems a braemer or a crail in a tweed would be what you're looking for. Just my two cents.

Have acquired a green and a gray argyll but find they are ALWAYS the wrong color for whatever kilt I'm wanting to wear.

I'm beginning to think kilt jackets are like kilt hose - you gotta buy a lot of different colors to be able to have one that works with the kilt you wanna wear.

    Gotta be a plot!!

I got my newest kilt jacket here. A charcoal bramear.

I'd opt for the "Wallace" jacket-- and try to get it in a charcoal grey wool, or a lightweight tweed, again in a neutral colour. The three button closure with waistcoat gives it a very business-like appearance. With the waistcoat removed it will still look smart with a collar and tie, although not as formal.
