| | | My 1st kilt
I posted over in the newbie’s thread a couple of weeks ago that I had found this site (I do apologise for my spelling ), And that I am looking into acquiring a kilt and having read the responses (cheers for them by the way) and a lot of other threads on here I’m considering a swk in Black Watch Tartan. My only links to The military would be the Air Training Corps which is an offshoot of the R.A.F of which I am a cadet and planning on becoming a VR(T) officer within the year when I turn 20, which I think would allow me to wear the Royal Air Force Tartan but as far as I am aware I can still wear the black watch? Any advice would help here. I know there is a lot of debate on wearing clan tartans but as I am not of any clan that I know of I will choose later my opinion when I figure it out. But my main question would be for a first kilt would you wise people advice a swk thrifty or standard model? Just for me to wear about the house and venture down to the shops when I get used to the kilt?

Even my 6 year old daughter wears a black watch. And she's never been in the military. Not yet.
Definately an open tartan as far as I understand. I'm not scottish either but there are still a lot of choices out there.

Yes, the Blackwatch is accepted as being a "universal" tartan that anyone can wear. I personally don't have first hand knowledge of the thrifty as compared to the standard, but I'd opt for the heavier weight version to get a better hang. When you decide to go with another tartan you could look at a nice wool in 14oz or so. Good luck.

The Black Watch was also adopted as a clan tartan by the Campbells, Grants and Munros, so it is not only a military tartan.

You say that you don't have a clan. Are you of Scottish ancestry yourself?

I would say the Standard is the better choice. It is closer to what you would expect from a kilt than the Thrifty.

The source is reliable, and does sell decent products.
Some people here have problems with them, though, as they are part of a chain ownded by an Indian family, which is widely considered to be flooding the market with tat.
