Have you tried the local Aberdeen thrift / resale shops. My mum-in-law is from Dundee and she swears that they are great places to buy kilts. Just a thought.

Back to the Stillwater Thrifty v. Standard question: my opinion? As long as you are of average proportions, the Standard should fit fairly well and give you a much better feel of a real kilt (enough material and heft to swish, liner, etc.) If you are of unusual proportions (i.e. a larger or smaller than average "taper' between hips and waist, or unusually long or short-torsoed,) then the Standard may not fit well enough to get you a good taste. In that case I'd wait for something custom-tailored, look for a deal on soemthign used, OR go for a Thrifty to tide you over.

I know some members here have good things to say about British vendors--at some point and price level they are selling roughly the same thing, so go with a shop that has a solid C/S reputatuon.

The 'Heritage of Scotland' kilts are hemmed which some people suggest, makes it a skirt. Still looks like a kilt from a passing bus though. They are cheap but if you're going to wear it alot you could do better for a little more outlay.

Alot of British Based, online shops buy Heritage Kilts in bulk and sell them on so alot of the casual kilts available in UK are actually Heritage kilts. Bear this in mind when buying online from a British source and read the descriptions of the casuals available carefully. If the seller actually states they are by Heritage (Carse of Gowrie casuals do) then you know for sure. If the seller's description matches the Heritage website description virtually word for word then you can pretty much bet it's one of theirs you're buying via a re-seller. Also another guide is if the photo's of the kilts on the website you're looking at are the same as the pictures on the Heritage site, again chances are...

I have a Heritage Black Watch and it's not a bad Kilt but if I was buying again I'd seriously look at a Stillwater Standard (I think their Black Stewart and Maclaren are very nice and there is the option to pleat to stripe on any of their kilts if you request that they do that for you at the time you order.)

The Postage from the US is pretty hefty so you need to factor that into your budget before you commit but if you email the Stillwater owner (Jerry, an X-marks Member, also contactable on here) he is very helpful and would be able to advise you on the exact postal rate to Mainland UK from the US.

Email Jerry via the stillwater website, explain your dilema and ask him to break down the costs for you so you have a clear picture of what you are going to pay before you decide.

I've not got a Stillwater Standard but I've read alot of the reviews on here and they seem to be excellent value compared to the similarly priced UK alternative. Heritage Kilts are OK but I think the Stillwater Standards are probably better.

Cheers thanks for all the advice but as this is my first kilt (hopefully of many) and im just buying it to get a feel for wearing one without an ocasion probaly only in the house and at £34 im not expecting too much but if i like it i will probaly get a stillwater and start saving for a tank

Get a SWK standard BW. It is my favorite hiking kilt and get rave compliments whenever I take it out.

I know you have bought one now but, if your only 20 and thinking of joining the RAF, you would probably find you are the sort of size to fit one of the any number of army surplus kilts on e bay.
They will all be top quality, trouble is they never fit us older somewhat more round types, however they are very good value for money, you can find a "proper" heavyweight wool kilt for between 50 and 100 quid, and if you had to pay proper price they would be up near a grand for the same thing. Always worth looking at

Just as an example, I have copied a link to a Gordon highlanders one starting at 50. And if your bothered by such things all of the military tartans have always been wearable by anyone, my first kilt at 8 years old was a black watch, and I have no connection with them at all.

The kilt arrived last wensday which was fast since i ordered it monday night, unfortunataly i started work tuesday night and only got home this morning.
I have tried it on and i will endevour to put up pics in the forseeable future(when i figure out how after ive taken them)
