    Offset Sporran Placement

When I play acoustic guitar in a kilt I move the sporran to the side.
I don’t move it all the way to the hip but rather just to the left of center.
I move the belt buckle aside also.
When I put the guitar down I center everything again.

My question is this: Is there and fashion/style precedent for just leaving the sporran worn off-center?

Do pipers or drummers have to arrange and rearrange accessories in a similar way?

Pipers - no, side drummers - you betcha. If it's in the way, move it or even remove it.

Dancing is an example where one may choose to wear the sporran off-center. From the book "So You're Going To Wear The Kilt!" by J. C. Thompson, he states:
"And in ballroom dancing the sporran must be put out of the way by sliding it over onto the left hip."

Thompson also suggests not to use your kilt's belt loops in order to make this adjustment easier.

Drummers wear the sporran pretty close to the hip!

As you can see from the pic of the Leatherneck pipes and drums, the drummers wear theirs offset while drumming.

Also a wise idea for hiking any distance or walking the mall....for obvious reasons....

Do it all the time....and its easier access for me, not having to fumble over my beer belly.

You've gotten good advice already, I'll just echo that drummers do it as standard, and when I go dancing I put the sporran over my left hip.

When I'm drumming I move it to my right hip.
When I am dancing and if it is getting in the way, I move it to my left hip.

I believe you'll find that in ancient times the sporran was usually worn to the side rather than in front as we usually do now days. I think that the old sporrans were actually more akin to modern day waist packs (a.k.a. fanny packs worn to the front). I think modern ways of wearing it low and in front may come from seeing so many regimental pipers who do so.

Now, before I am deluged with disagree-ers (as opposed to disagreeable sorts ), I base this on memory of research I did a long time ago. Whenever I am out hiking or doing something a little more athletic that hoisting a wee dram and telling lies with my friends at the pub, I, like riverkilt, have pulled my sporran to the side and tightened the strap to keep it nearer my waist.

At least this will give you a historical precedent for wearing it anyway you like.
