An Eton jacket probably won't need tailoring. See this thread:

I think the following link with the dress etiquette should do. If still indoubt contact the group that is hosting your local event.

    https://www.mymarinecorpsball.com/EtiquettePopUp.aspx

    dress guidlines for marines:
    http://www.tecom.usmc.mil/mcub/libra...CH2.htm#UR2001

link to website of the Fresno Marine Ball:
    http://www.lemoore.navy.mil/matsg/mcball.htm

p.s. Call the formal rentals (i.e. Tuxedo Stores) to see if they rent kilts... Some do and they don't really advertise it.

I'm guessing part of your point is that the Marines take this seriously and so should all attendees and that should include the outfit worn? I think it is an excellent poit to make.

True, but you would still want to switch it from looking like a waiter's jacket to a kilt jacket. That means changing the buttons, etc. If you are not good with a needle and thread, you may want to take it in to a pro, so that the buttons are straight and line up on each arm. Brunnets and Struth in Ontario has some PC waistcoats for $45 cdn in their clearance section that could be added to add to the final appearance as well.
