plaid w/ a solid??
Can a plaid and broach (say a blackwatch plaid) be worn with a solid kilt? I know not to mix tartans but don't know if a tartan can be worn w/ a solid other than flashes. I'm thinking a black kilt and flashes and either a black stewart or blackwatch plaid.
Suggestions?

Why?
I can recall seeing a painting of an 18th Century Scottish Nobleman who was wearing three or four different tartans. i.e. different tartans for kilt, plaid, vest, and hose.
A plaid with a solid kilt should not clash as bad as the attire in the painting I mentioned.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Although beware of the "Tartan Police" as they may have something to say. Personally, I think it could look really nice.

I've been looking for large print tartan shirts to wear with solid kilts. Think it would be a good look
Like the idea of tartan flashes with solid kilts (when it cools off).
Course, I also sew patches on my solid kilts...

clashing ?
JJ,
I did a bit of re-enactment some time ago and those guys told me wear as many tartans as possible, they said the scots where dressed like peacocks and it would show the wealth of the man.
The non clashing look is a modern idea.
Had you thought to wear a solid plaid aswell ?
But for the grace of God go I.

solid plaid...
Had you thought to wear a solid plaid as well?
That's what I thought of yesterday when I first read this thread: the London Scottish, who have been mentioned before on this board, wear a kilt of Hodden Grey wool -- a Homespun Brown, the traditional colour of ghillies & stalkers (hunters) in the Highlands -- and their pipers wear a matching hodden grey plaid with their full dress "kit". Irish pipers wear a solid colour plaid, or brat as well, usually a dark hunter green.
Cheers,
Todd

Perhaps the Stillwater Shadow kilt with a plaid to match?? That could look sharp.
