    Pleat Options

I recently designed a tartan for my family and I am going to have it wove and made into a kilt. I was wondering what your opinions are on it.

Here is a picture of the tartan. It's pretty simple, but I chose symbolic colors and my family likes it:

I don't know your thread counts, but if the sett size is "typical" your pleats are much wider as pictured than your kilt maker is likely to want to make.

I am pretty sure BarbT posted recently that 3/4" to 1" (7/8"?) is typical for the pleated part below the fell.

I am going to guess the red stripe in the blue field would be "about" 1/4" actual, so each visible pleat would be about two parts blue for each one part red.

Allowing for scale I probably wouldn't pleat to the white stripe, although it might be pleasing.

Honestly I think it might look really nice pleated to the sett.

I'll defer on critiquing the tartan swatch pictured. In all fairness my clan tartan is growing on me quite a bit; I personally prefer the original variants to the later Sobieski style in my clan red. The Sobieski's dropped a couple of the stripes from six threads down to two, with actual swatches in hand I personally prefer the original variant.

You might hold off a couple or three weeks before you place your order. BarbT mentioned as an aside in a recent thread she would write a post about tartan design. She is coming up on finals week fast at her regular job, I wouldn't look for that new thread until a few weeks after college finals are over.

If you have looked at a lot of other tatans and feel great about this, don't let me hold you back. I have a n00b tartan eye.

I agree that pleating it to the sett would be a great look.
