Please no one get me wrong!
Acrylic is a great fiber. If Worsted (that's pulling and straightening before spinning), spun into yarn nice and tight, and then woven just like kilt wool, Acrylic has the capability of being the best choice of all the man-made fibers to rival Wool.
The P/V from Marton Mills is woven this way, and right now is the best looking and feeling alternative to Tartan Wool.
I have yet to find a mill that does this with Acrylic however. It does not seem that any mill is spinning yarns from man-made fibers thick enough to produce the weight per linear yard that we are used to in good Tartan Wool.

Thanks for the detailed burn test info Steve. Takes me back to my college textiles class where they tought us that.
I still do unintentional burn tests when I use a candle lighter to burn the Irish pennants off my garments. I still pay attention. On kilts I find many readily available threads poking out from the belt/sporran loops. Also often find them on the inside of the kilts.
Not really vital since I know the fabrics used in the kilts I buy, but a nice verification.
And....I've been unsuccessfully trying to light some celery so I'll know that smell...can't get it going though.
