Pullover sweater vests

For something a shade less formal than a matching vest (to be worn with a Crail jacket with horn buttons, not black barathea) what thinks the Great Rabble about a V-neck pullover sweater? To be worn with a tank in the most traditional of ways with the most traditional of accessories.

Just testing the waters here.

What pattern or style of sweater would the traditionalists suggest if they do indeed approve?

Uh oh, I'm not a tradtionalist, so take this with a few pinches of salt. I wear sweaters with kilts often. Here are my usual stand by's:

-V-neck solid sweater in complimentary color, white button down dress shirt,with or without tie.

-Turtleneck solid color sweater with tweed Braemar jacket

-"Commando" style crew neck sweater, solid color (usually black) with dress shirt under it

-"Commando" style V-neck sweater solid color (again usually black in my case) with dress shirt under it.

-V-neck sweater vest, solid complimentary color with white dress shirt, with or without coordinating tie.

I enjoy wearing sweaters for a more than casual look, but not as "pipe band looking" as just wearing a black vest.

I think sweaters and sweater vests work great with a tweed jacket





Solid colored ones are a safe bet, if you go with a pattern then you are taking a risk. I happen to like this striped one with my Isle of Skye tartan kilt





Some think it works and others hate it. I happen to think it is extremely comfortable

I, like Pete, am a big fan of the "commando" or "wooly pully" style sweater and think they are very smart with the kilt. They are a great asset to the kilt wearer's wardrobe as they can easily be dressed up or down and make a nice alternative to a jacket. However I wouldn't wear one with a jacket.

I find the crew necks to be more casual and the V necks more formal

Definitely. For dress casual over a dress shirt with or without a tie or over a turtleneck or mock turtleneck, great for golfing kilted, come in a variety of colors and complimentary patterns that work pretty well with tartan. I tend to be cautious about mating a multicolor "Argyle" style knit vest with most of my tartans, although I have a couple solid color vest with "Argyle" style patterns that really work well. And as Jamie shows they do work well as a replacement for a matching vest under a tweed jacket.

I think this style of pullover works great with the kilt, with or without an accompanying tweed jacket.

I got all kinds of complements on this ensemble a few years ago at the Stone Mountain Games.

Deep red sweater vest (pullover) with my tweed Argyle jacket worked just fine.

I recently got myself one of these lamswool beauties from the House of Cheviot in black and am in love with it! (No pictures yet).

Also, I love to wear sweater vests with shirt and tie for a dressier look. I think they look great.

I would wear a pullover sweater or a pullover sweater vest with a jacket, but not just the sweater vest. Just not my style. I would wear a button-up vest without a jacket, though.

As you can see (if I uploaded the photo correctly) I am wearing my blue V-neck Wooly Pully with my Leatherneck tartan (& my beautiful daughter). I also wear it with my Green Marine and my Black V-Neck Wooly Pully.

I find it comfortable and dressy enough without needing a jacket. I am however looking for a Lovat Green Argyle in #48 (late hint, Santa).

Looks good Steve, and thanks fellows. I guess specifically I'm wondering about my charcoal crail with the horn buttons, but I think that's been addressed too. I'll be wearing a clerical shirt under it, so it sounds like the biggest challenge is a suitable colour.
