    Question Quick Question

Would it be wrong to have a certain outfit assigned to each kilt? For instance, a t-shirt and sneakers to go with a khaki utilikilt and a button up to go with a more formal kilt? It may be a dumb question, but I just want other opinions.

no, think about what types of shirts you might wear with khaki versus grey pants. To me, it's the same thing. I certainly wouldnt want to wear a prince charlie with a casual hiking kilt kilt for example. Just dont get too obsessed..........:-)

No not wrong at all, of course this does not mean you cant mix it up a bit when the mood strikes.

My only suggestion would be that you can dress-up a casual outfit, say an FK cargo with a button down shirt and tie but I wouldn't want to go too casual when wearing tartan. Just MHO.

For me, much of the fun of kilting is to explore the ways different things go with different kilts - exploring the fringes of fashion.

Of course, there are no Kilt Police in my town so its easier for me.

I think if you play around with the wardrobe you already have you'll find new and good looking combinations with your kilts.

    Enjoy the fashion freedom too!

I shamelessly stole, err, borrowed, err, cite the following from Matt Newsome's blog page:

"The Highland dress is essentially a 'free' dress -- that is to say, a man's taste and circumstances must alone be permitted to decide when and where and how he should wear it... I presume to dictate to no man what he shall eat or drink or wherewithal he shall be clothed." -- The Hon. Stuart Ruaidri Erskine, The Kilt & How to Wear It, 1901.

To integrate the quote into an answer to your question, I would venture that there is absolutely nothing wrong with having "set outfits" to go with different kilts. Just don't get too (ahem) "sett in your ways" ha ha ha ha!

Darn, Kid, I wish I'd come up with that first.

Like Riverkilt, I like to mix and match . . .within limits of taste. He and I are of the same generation, so I suspect our tastes are generally close to the same. I personally would never wear a tank top and combat boots with a kilt--I'd look pretty fooish at my age. And i would never wear a palid shirt with tartan. I try to look pretty conservative.

But I do love the look of a sweater and a kilt. (I don't own anything but tartan. Might some day, but not now.) I love to mix up different shirts and such to see what looks cool. (Old guys do like to be cool.) And I love the look of a khaki shirt with a kilt in the summer. Then there are all the opportunities to "dress up" with a tie, jacket, prince charlie, or doublet.

To answer your question, sure, fix up all the set outfits you want. But you may be cheating yourself out of opportunities to experiment. Just enjoy what your're doing.
