| | | Ruche Cravat with Prince Charlie Outfit
Next weekend I'm attending the wedding of my niece and obviously I will be kilted.
Although I have the full formal outfit, I was thinking of wearing a ruche cravat instead of a bow tie.
Does the Prince Charlie outfit (Hunting Stewart tartan) go with the cravat and what colour of hose would be best?
Is a waistcoat desirable or not with a cravat?

Ah...the ruche tie/cravat...second only to white kilt hose in terms of bringing out the opinionated side of Xmarksers everywhere!

Please don't take this the wrong way Jimmy, but are you really wanting to wear a PC to a wedding? It is your choice of course and personally I am not a fan of ruche ties under any circumstance, but that's my slant on things. Hose colour? Any colour other than white. Have fun!

I see a lot more pictures of ruche ties in UK settings than I do in the US. I would advise against it in America, but I assume they are popular, at least with the hire shops there. Will you expect to see others wearing them, either with or without a kilt?
About those hose- I would try to match the red in the tartan. If that seems too strong, try the yellow. Have fun.

Bow tie or straight tie (depending on jacket/time of day and formality of the wedding). With a ruche tie you'll end up looking like you've rented your whole outfit (ESPECIALLY if worn with white hose).

As far as I am aware there are no evening weddings in the UK so the PC(evening wear) should not really be worn to a daytime wedding(would you wear a dinner suit,tux, to a daytime wedding?). It also smacks of hire company misinformation of how it really ought to be done and their one outfit fits all mindset and frankly it is wrong. They (hire companies) are actually taking money for incorrect advice and they get away with it!
White hose do not , to my eyes, set the kilt off to best advantage and that is for me the most important issue. The far less important matter is again, that they are standard issue for hire company outfits.
I know you and others might think that I am an outdated fuddy duddy who really ought to just fade away(that is being polite, perhaps!), but the kilt is Scotland's, yours, national attire and how can we expect the rest of the world to give the kilt the justice it deserves if we , the Scots, can't get it right.
Have fun at the wedding, but whilst you are there, spend a few minutes looking at what people are wearing with the kilt and how they are wearing it and you will see that some things look right and some things don't. What you decide is right is entirely down to you. Have fun!

I would generally consider myself a traditionalist as far as highland attire (and most attire, for that matter) is concerned; unlike Jock, however, I'm not completely opposed to the ruche tie. In my eyes, the problem with a ruche tie and a Prince Charlie jacket isn't as much the jacket as it is the waistcoat. Ruche ties are not intended to be worn with three-button waistcoats, and (in my opinion) the PC doesn't look right with a five button waistcoat.
My advice for wearing the ruche tie would be to wear it with a black Argyll jacket and waistcoat. In this case, I think the tie looks fine and helps add a little formality that the ensemble would be lacking with a straight tie. Personally, I'd probably wear a bow tie, but I understand that some people prefer the look of the cravat.
As for white hose - other hose just seem classier. White hose really do scream "rental kilt" and would be akin to wearing everyday white socks with a tuxedo.
Just my two cents - I hope you have a lovely time at the wedding!
