    Question Shirt in or out?

    Hello all,

I'm a pretty new kilt wearer (Drummond) and so far have only worn it to my sister’s wedding. The rules are pretty clear cut for formal wear so that wasn’t a problem.

I do have a question about casual wear though. I’m the sort of person who never tucks his shirt in if he doesn’t have to. My first instinct is to do the same with my kilt. I do notice however that most of the pictures on this forum have the shirt tucked in. Is this just the way you’d all wear your shirts when wearing pants or it more “important” than that? Is it so you can see the belt? I know there’s a pretty good “wear what you like” vibe here but it is pretty clear from the pictures that most people (on this forum at least) tuck their shirt in.

Personal opinin, but I think an untucked shirt with a kilt just looks wrong.

Tucked in, you will show off the kilt, belt and sporran in all of it's glory.

That sums up my reason for why I prefer the shirt tucked in as well. I suppose with some "casual" styles an untucked shirt would be less of an issue, but if you are going with a nice belt and sporran, I'd suggest tucking it in.

I sometimes wear my shirt tails out when going casual, as long as the shirt's not too long. I think this look (from a commonly seen ad) is OK:

    "Unless I have to..."

Most sartorial situations with a kilt mean you have to in order to look good

unless im just lounging around the house I tuck mine in too. It looks a lot better, it shows off your belt, buckle and sporran if youre wearing any. And it seems that it might cut down on the skirt comments. Lets face it, a great belt, big buckle, a sporran and a nice kilt are pretty styling even if youre just wearing them with a tucked in tshirt.

unless doing manual labor (lawnmowing, woodcutting, etc) tucked in is the way to go.

Welcome aboard. I always wear mine tucked in. That includes doing manual labor.
