I happen to married to a Southern woman of La. Cajun/Creole heritage. Her family are some of the most delightful, polite and hospitable people I have known.

What do you call cousins where you live?

While Southerners and Texans may gripe about yankees, it has been my experience, and custom, to keep it to our southern selves. I was raised in the strict virtues of being a Southern(Texas) Gentleman (had I not, I would have been disciplined!), and while I have many times griped about yankees, I would not do it to them directly. Five generations of watching Yankees come to the south, griping about how things were back north, then trying to change our ways, had bred animosity in much of my family. But far be it from me to not be friendly to all, until I learn their ilk. I judge a person by their behavior, not their birthplace. I have had the great pleasure of calling many a Yankee friend and even brother. Though I now call Colorado home, I remain, quite proudly, a Southern Gentleman. Now if we could just get these retched californians out of here...;)

The Greeks and Romans regarded them as the attire of barbarians (including the Celts, you know ),
Very true; that's why traditional Clergy still wear robes after 2,000 years. It was a sign of being 'civilized'. Trousers were frowned upon. They were mainly for the colder northern climates. Kilts, of course were woollen plus tall hose, so managed quite well in the Highlands with the added comfort of freedom of movement. Plus in wading icy streams, there were no wet trouser legs to cause discomfort- just lift & wade.

After being regularly kilted, wearing shorts on an errand got me the question " What happened to your kilt?" The errand to pick up a newspaper and a quart of milk on shorts got me that question five times. Everyone around here expects me to be kilted now. Need more kilts, less shorts.

I am privileged to be able to say the same of my wife's family who are Virginians. That her mother was an egregious exception to this rule simply made me more grateful for the rule.

Do the language laws in Quebec really require you to hire a mime who doesn't speak French if you hire one who doesn't speak English? Could a mime who doesn't speak either fill both roles at the same time? (Thanks to Calvin Trillin.)

    Southerners/Yankees; Highlanders/Lowlanders; Albanachs/Sassenachs...

I have enough of a job explaining that, due to an accident of geography, I was born in Torquay, Devon on the English south coast and yet don't feel at all English! Well, having a full name like Bruce McKenzie Fraser sorta makes you think as a kid growing up!

It wasn't my fault that my Scottish-born (Jura) grandfather, whose family were from Stratherrick, demobbed from the Royal Navy in Plymouth in 1922 and married a local girl!

As for kilt-wearing here in the English borders, I value my life not to wear one as it's the last bastion of both male chauvanism and they burn guys in 'skirts' in these parts!

    Cheers

    Bruce
