    Solicitation of Opinion: Sporrans

    Hey, gang.

I have a kind of odd personal issue -- I don't like fur. I don't mind leather, because, at least in principle, we also eat the beef the leather comes from. Many fur animals, however, are mostly wasted after the fur is taken.

So I have a question -- is a fur sporran absolutely essential to formal kilt dress? If not, what would you recommend in its place? What would you think of someone wearing a patent leather sporran to a black-tie event?

I see nothing wrong with it at all. Even a matte black sporran with a little bit of silver, like a leather semi-formal sporran would be well suited for formal. It may come off a bit "less-formal" but if done well, I believe it would work.

    Edit:

    This might be too plain

But the one Bubba suggested is a great option

I also agree with bubba. I think it looks great with formal wear.

I believe those are called "Hunting Sporrans," and I agree they look sharp for formal or semi-formal wear.

It sounds like your objection to fur may be a moral one (as oppose to allergies, or health reasons). Just for the record, the fur used in many sporrans shipped to the U.S. is actually cow hide.

I also believe there are synthetic fur sporrans available as well....

I agree that a leather sporran can look quite dressy. You do need some metal on it to dress it up. The one shown above would look fine.

I agree with all above. Also, you will notice that the description for a lot of fur sporrans state bovine fur and those should fit your objections to other fur sporrans.

I think you would do well with a leather dress sporran like this one:

If you look at this thread it has my review of the sporran which I purchased from the Celtic Croft one of our sponsors:
