Sporran & hose for a daytime wedding?

So I think I've talked my fiance into my best man (younger brother) and myself being kilted for the wedding. Since we're planning on getting married in the afternoon and I'm somewhat old fashioned and a stickler about not wearing black tie before sunset, we've picked out a charcoal tweed argyle and 5 button waist coat.

Through my time here on Xmarks I've got a general idea of level of dress, but I want to wear the kilt with a significant nod to tradition so I have two questions:

1.) Being an Argyle, the first sporran that comes to mind is an all-leather daywear sporran, but it being a wedding, I was thinking that a full dress sporran might be appropriate. Not having a full dress sporran to test out the look, I ask for your advice. What would look best and be the most appropriate?

2.) Are tartan hose appropriate for daywear? I think they're cool as heck and look super sharp, but I'm not sure if they'll "go" with an Argyle get-up.

I think you can wear Argyll hose for day time, and I'd say you could dress up the outfit with a dress sporran

I would suggest one of the Ferguson Britt fur sporrans for the Scottish Tartan Museum. Glen (McMudo) is wearing one in the first photo in his post, and here is another.


They really take semi formal to another level, IMHO.

My wedding was a daytime wedding. I wore a black Barathea Argyle, but dressed it down a bit with a regular dress shirt and black necktie. For my sporran I chose a black leather semi-dress with white rabbit fur front and tassels. I would have gone with the tweed Argyle that you have chosen but could not afford the extra expense of purchasing one at the time.

I second the recommendations for the Fergusson Britt sporrans, they work for both very formal and semi-formal applications. I don't have one yet, but they are very high on my must have list. I had the chance to examine some in person at the local Highland Games at the Tartan Museums booth. They are quite the piece of craftsmanship and would set off your outfit quite nicely.

Also, as the groom, even though it is a daytime event, you have some room to be more formal and flashy than the groomsmen and male guests. I say wear the tartan hose and I also say wear a full dress sporran if you so choose.

I agree with the Ferguson Britt recommendations as well as the Argyll hose. But any semi-dress or full dress sporran will also work well. And congrats on the kilted wedding!

Based on the pictures and advice here tartan hose will definitely make an appearance. Plus pops said he'd foot the bill for a set for the three of us (pops, my brother and me). Can't afford to pass this one up!

I do like the look of the FB sporrans and think they would add a nice touch to the whole ensemble. Now I've just got to oogle some pictures of them to decide which I like the best.

Raibeart: I've got the black barathea argyle as well and was going to wear that to save a little coin too, but the fiance has a thing against black so that got the kaibasch. Oh well. At least she agreed to the kilt!

This ain't gonna be cheap. Good thing I've got a year to save up for this stuff!

OK, the old curmudgeon just has to ring in on this one.

Solid hose colors are fine and much cheaper than tartan, so why not spend the big bucks on something else unless you are just dying for tartan hose. And a fur sporran is for evening unless there's a head stuck on it. (See http://www.sporrans.com/thompson.html)

You can be "appropriate," make a pretty good fashion statement, and save some bucks (maybe) with the following:

* solid navy (or whatever color matches your kilt) hose
* all leather dress sporran

Check this out:

A very tasteful, dressy day sporran which I think works much better for day wear than fur. You can get 'em in black, too. (I really have a thing about fur during the day time.) This is a very nice, pricey one from Matt Newsomes place, but it's among the nicest I've seen.

You can find a similar cheaper model like this one that I have:


Note the tartan hose for a day wedding, but then, I already owned the hose and didn't have to go out and buy some.

You can also get a sporran like mine with a metal cantel that adds a bit of dressiness, but I like the all leather.
