Stillwater Heavyweight or...?

Hi all

Well good news! As of last Friday - I now own two Stillwater Standards (McLeod Hunting and Black Watch) both are great kilts for the money. Since my card is nearly molten plastic right now its best I let it cool off for a while. That gives all my brothers and sisters here time to suggest the next kilt. I'm thinking of a wool or wool blend. I like the Stillwater Heavyweight, but I think one Black Watch may be enough (will Jerry be offering other tartans in the HW - I hope so).

I'm open to other ideas but I need to be in the price range of the Stillwater HW. Please help me spend my money - wisely.

Thanks!

You don't ask for much do you It's going to be near impossible to find another quality kilt in wool for $160. The question about other tartans from Stillwater is the $64,000 question though. According to their web site they are making sure the manufacturing and cloth issues are resolved before releaseing any new tartans other than BW and Black.

If you are open to PV, try USA Kilts for some great options. Their casual is $110 delivered and their semi-traditionals (still PV) are about $230.

If you are interested in contemporary kilts there are some great deals at Freedom Kilts.

Some alternate sources would be thrift stores, E-Bay and estate sales. I've picked up more than a few kilts this way. Look around, you never know what you may find.

Phil,

Since you are going to let the plastic cool off, you might consider waiting for Stillwater's Black heavyweight. I don't know Jerry's timetable on this, but if you sent him an e-mail he could probably give you some idea.

Another alternative might be one of Matthew Newsome's box pleated heavyweight's. These are 4-yard kilts. He has a special right now on two English tweeds that are tartans. One is a purple and green combination, the other is different tones of blue. As I recall, Matt would make you a 4-yard, box pleated kilt out of either of these tweeds for around $230. Here is the link to Matt's site.
