    stillwater standard

so...is it permissible to wear a stillwater standard to semi-formal/formal events? like, weddings and dinners and concerts and such? they look pretty good to me...and they're cheap enough that i could have all the offered tartans in under a year...but i'd hate to drop ALL that money if it would be better for me to save the dough for a tank from kiltstore.net or some such place. of course, nothing to stop me from having a tank eventually, plus i wouldn't dream of being married in anything BUT Carolina Tartan and a Prince Charlie, unless i can once and for all PROVE my geneological connection with Burnett, in which case....

    thoughts? questions? snide remarks?

We shall not cease from exploration/ And the end of all our exploring/ Will be to arrive where we started/ And know the place for the first time. <><

No reason why you can't wear a Stillwater Standard for special events. It'll still look and feel better than you know what. ;-)

    Carolina tartan...

Why not a Carolina tartan box-pleated kilt from our Matt Newsome?

Glad to see your loyalty to the Carolina tartan; it is quite handsome, and it's always guid to see someone choose a district/state tartan.

    Cheers,

    Todd

I haven't seen a Standard from Stillwater, but if the workmanship on the Heavyweight is any rule then I doubt if most people could tell the difference, once you add the right shirt, tie, jackets, etc.

And anyone who notices would be a cad and catty to mention it.

    toad-mon,

be sure to read all the threads on Stillwaters; especially on how to batten down the pleats on a Standard. personally, i can say the SK's are an excellent value. i have two SK-S's, an SK-H and considering the new SK-H Black Shadow. i receive numerous compliments on them.

keep in mind the SK Standard is a bit flighty in a breeze! all precautions, ahem, and proprieties, should be maintained!

I have an SK standard in Blackwatch. I would wear to to a formal function, if I had the right accessories. Only the die-hards could tell the difference.

From the look of their website, go for it. The biggest difference is the price. The next major difference would be that the front should be shorter than the back. Not all kiltmakers make this a big enough difference. I can't really tell how much of a difference is in a SW. The other cosmetic differences are going to be covered by the jacket and so, no problem.

(By the way, I like the abbreviation SW Stillwater and SK for Sportkilt, but that's me.)

    Why should that be?

I know why I need a kilt longer in the back than in the front, but that is because of my big gut and big butt.

That kilts SHOULD be longer in the back than in the front is simply unfounded legend

BTW, I agree with the SW (or SWK) as an abbreviation of Stillwater Kilts, and SK for SportKilts.

This is not true. The kilt is generally the same in the front and back, with the exception of reasons Doc stated.

I think that's something we forget a lot. Many of us own hand-sewn traditionals, so we get picky.

Would most folks we run into have any clue about the difference? Probably not.
